strange shifting

i got a 99 250 2wd my company truck and when u put her in reverse it takes a good 5 seconds for her to kick in. just in curiousity anybody know why she does that?

Only in reverse? Usually a lag in an auto is due to a low fluid level.

I agree with Joe_D. Sounds like low or possibly very old fluid. Might be time for a top-off or flush-and-fill.
