Maybe a great barn find...

Hi Everyone,
Just a while ago I was out for my nightly walk with my Rottweiler and a guy down the road stopped me to ask a question. He said that his Grandfather died recently and that the estate had to get rid of a 1956 Ford F-250 with a Lincoln welding machine mounted on the steel bed on it. He knew that I had restored several Lincoln welders because he saw them for sale out in front of my place. I told him I was also into trucks. He asked what the truck was worth. Nothing has run for 15 years but he says it has been in a barn. I told him probably a grand realistically although he may find that people will tell him it is worth more. I said the trick is to find someone who would pay the so-called true value. I pointed out that those trucks usually go for around five if he expects to sell it anytime soon. We are in a depressed area and that probably would work against getting a higher price. I also told him I never have paid more than five for one of those welders. I also pointed out that if was bigger than an SA-200 it was probably worth even less. I think he wants me to come and look at it next weekend. He says that the truck is not rusted out and the body is good. Based on this, any opinions?

What do you need an opinion for? Go look at the truck.

Could be a cool resto project, might look good sitting next to the restored welders, ...
You could ' hide ' it behind the diesel van untill your ready to work on it....

I intend to do that next weekend. I was wondering what opinions were regarding a price as compared to what I said and think.

I recommend finding a price which you and your neighbor are both happy with. Beyond that, just try to figure out what the truck is worth to you. I paid 1000 for my running and rusty 52 F-1 and some said I paid too much for it while others told me that they would've bought it within a week if I hadn't gotten it first. It's all a matter of opinion really.

Check that welder out real good. We picked one up from a friend that had been in a barn for ? years. It didn't cost anything but mice had eaten all the wire insulation and it was useless. Maybe some of the switches could work on other older welders. Do get the truck even if you junk the welder.

I have restored and repaired a number of Lincoln welding machines. The wiring is no big deal. Check out www.pvpmedia.com/wfs.htm to see some of my before and after work.

I think they might be doing a little fishing here to see what they can get for this truck. I will post a new thread on it or here if the thread is not burried by then.

Yeah, it's one of those in the eye of the beholder things. To me the whole deal is worth a grand if I am going to make anything on it. Even if I end up keeping it I need to look at it as something I can get out from under without loosing my shirt.

The cab and hood of a 56 F-250 are the same as with an F-100, so if it's in good shape, you've probably got close to a grand worth of stuff right there.

The fenders are likely the same as an F-100, but could be larger, so have a close look. F-100 sized fenders would be easier to resell, and there's another few hundred dollars if they are in good shape.

And all that is independent of whatever the welder is worth...

Thanks for the compliment man. Maybe someday my old 53 F-100 will look that good.
