Question Transmission change

I have a 94 f-150 it has the mazda 5 speed. The trans is grinding in to third gear. From what I hear this is typically the first gear to go when the trans is getting ready to mess the bed. I know anything is possible with enough money but how much work would it be to switch the mazda for a zf? Is it even worth changing to the different trans? I also hear the zf is the heavier trans but is really no better is this true? The pick up is 4x4 could I keep the original transfer case? I have future plans for this pick up but do not have the cash or time now to start or complete this project. I just dont want to have to change transmissions every 80,000 miles. Or is this pretty average for these transmissions. Any info would terriffic and greatly apreciated

This thread should help this is a very common swap, I didn't feel like typing all that twice and I saw his post first, it is an easy swap and is well worth it you will have a completely different truck when you are done.

so I should be able to use the same clutch and transfercase? Also will the drive shaft need to be modified?

Yes you can use the transfer case it will just bolt to the tranny and the drive shafts are fine the 4x4 versions of the ZF and M5 are the same length. The 1/2 ton clutch and slave cyl from the half ton work fine.

My truck is doing the grinding thing to third also. Not all the time. Is this common only after 83000 miles?
How long do I have? What can I do?

The ZF is the way to go unless you rebuild your Mazda.

The NP435, a fine box, lacks OD. It also needs a bell and is most likely a different length, which will mean cross member and drive shaft work. Because of the bell issue, it will also need a clutch set up fabricated or adapted.

that makes sense. i didnt know much about the conversion. People seem satisfied with the swap, but the lack of OD and the other issues make it a problem.

From what i have been reading. A zf from diesel will not work with a 302? I have found one of those and was wondering if it would work.

Diesels have a different bellhousing pattern from the 302/351/300.
