i have a 69 302. i put in a new timing chain, new carb, distributor, and coil when i put it together. when i try to start it all i get is flames out of the carb. sometimes it turns over slow while backfiring and when i open the trottle wide open it turns over faster. with the mark on the balancer at top dead center, i checked the #1 piston: at the top, and the #1 cylinder valves: both closed. then i checked to make sure my rotor was pointing at #1 and not #6. i have checked myplug wires over and over. the screws on the factory 2 bbl carb are now set at 1 1/2 turns because i thought i might have been flooding. i don't have restricted exhaust because i have open manifolds right now. any help is GREATLY appreciated.
Try putting a timing light on it while turning it over. It may be too far advanced.

I had a similar problem when I tried firing my 351 windsor over (I used a cam with the 302 firing order) I thought that everything was right but it turns out I was 180 off on the timing. I ended up pulling the no. 1 plug and watching to make sure that the no. 1 cylinder was coming up on it's compression stroke. All the timing marks were lined up right and the valves were sitting where they were supposed to be. I would also check your timing. Hope this helps.
