Howdy, I am trying to stick the distributor back into my 77F150 with a 302. After I line up my rotor and dist. body to my marks and try to insert the dist. it drops down until the gear engages but no further. it looks like it needs to go down another 1/2 inch give or take.
The engine was not cranked while I was working on it.
I have never put one of these back into a 302 so how much force should I apply here? Should I be hammer tapping this thing back down into place or should it just drop all the way in?
The bottom of the distributor is getting hung up on the oil pump drive shaft. If you look at the bottom of the dist gear you will see where and how the drive shaft hooks to the gear. Try rotating the dist on tooth either direction. Once fully in, you can get the phasing back to your marks. this will be good enough to start. Be sure to re-time it when you are done.
