help with trans

i have just bought a 1988 ford f150 with a 302 in it and my auto trans will not shift above 2nd gear i took off the pan changed filter and fluid then in the bottom of the pan i found a small hard plastic wite plunger with a o ring on it where dose it go

that little white plunger is from the factory assy line to plug up the dipstick hole . when the tube is installed the plug is pushed into the pan.sounds like trans has never been serviced.if it had the plug would have been discarded when trans was serviced.

then why wont the truck shift out of second and plz dont tell me its got to be rebuilt

was their any metal shavings in the pan? did the fluid have a metallic look to it? if your answer is yes to both questions then the trans needs rebuilt.
