Is it supposed to be a fairly dark color? Just rolled in here at my folks place a few hours ago.. been on the road since 3 AM. My truck seems low on power, so while it's just sitting I figured it wouldn't hurt to crack the filter housing open and see if the filter is plugged up with some kind of crap. It looks okay to me, other than being a blackish color. The fuel that came out was a light green color. There is a little crud in the bottom of the filter housing but nothing too serious. Should I worry about replacing the fuel filter or just let it be for now? No idea when it was changed last since I just bought the truck about 2 months ago.
That does help Jason, mine looks about the same. I'm going to leave it be for now, I'm sure addressing some other issues (EBPV cleaning, check UVCH's) will eventually explain my low power situation.
If you already have it out and have no clue as to the last time it was changed, do it for sure. Especially with crud in the housing. Get all of the crud of there for sure.
Chase, don't pay too much attention to that outer screen that you see the color on. Flip it upside down and look at the pleated paper filter behind the screen. You can only see the bottom 1/4" or so, but that's the part you should pay attention to.

Suggestions on how to do it? Remember you're talking to a diesel-tard here.
It's going in tomorrow to get the exhaust finished up, then to the tire shop to try and save the cupping tires nearly destroyed by toast ball joints. When I get home it's scramble to try and get the ball joints replaced and a bunch of other crap done for a trip to WA. Sadly, it may not make the trip to WA because I don't trust the f-ing trans, and I don't have the $ to throw at it right now for a VB and torque converter so once it gets home it may be parked for a while.
As far as I can tell all boots are fine. I wondered about leaking up pipes but I don't see any soot or anything on the firewall (not that I looked terribly hard but I figure it should be easy to see if its there). I keep noticing more and more weird things happening with the truck, I'm starting to think I screwed up big time with my purchase.
Brand new 6637 with a Pete cover, I don't think that's the problem. I guess there could be a torn boot somewhere that is blowing off boost... how likely is that? Hole in the IC? I have a ton of other stuff to check too- fuel regulator screen, EBPV tube and sensor, EBPV valve itself, UVCH's...
You can unplug the EBPV and get that out of the way. A leaking boot is very possible and not always easy to see. A dirty screen or weak pump is a possiblity, but would be more noticable at higher fuel demands.
EBPV is unplugged. I tried plugging it back in to see if it made a difference, but when I'd let my foot off the gas with my shorty straight pipe I could hear it flap shut so I unplugged it again. It could all be related to my weird acting trans I guess... I think I'll name my truck "the gold $12,000 mistake."
