Just wondering how many here have had their tie-rod ends pop off/seperate while driving?
I recently had mine let go while driving (slow speed luckily) and had to get a tow. This is the second time a tie-rod end seperated on this suv while driving.
I'm thinking of adding a "AAA limited edition towing package" emblem below the Eddie Bauer one.
Are you using quality replacement parts(Moog)? If your pulling tie rod ends apart that frequently I'd take a very close look at the upper and lower ball joints on both sides and try not to point the steering wheel directly at the pot holes. You might try to avoid one once in a while. This method helps save all of your front end parts not just tie rod ends.
Steering linkage is supposed to be inspected every 15K miles (it's in the scheduled maintenance section of your owner's manual package). A reminder letter was sent to owners of 97-02 F-series-based vehicles back in the fall of '04 to have the periodic inspections performed and also supplied an updated procedure to inspect the TREs for excessive play, seal leakage, or corrosion of the stud.
