460 Mpg?
I've set my timing to run on regular, no measurable difference with a carb.
Best.........13 hwy.
Worst.......5ish, in a wicked snow storm. 4X4 low, lights and blower going full tilt, lots of idling while out hooking up the chain to pull idiots out of ditches and trees.
'mudd, what kind of driveline do you have?

Octane has nothing to do with milage it is simply a way to measure resistance to detonation, higher octane fuel can be compressed more before it detonates. If you engine isn't having any detonation or pinging problems you will seen on gains from premium fuel actually the more volital lower octane fuels have more chemical energy but it is such a small difference that you most likely will not notice the change. The 460s my old boss has always got between 10-12 but it really didn't seem to matter if we were loaded or not.

That's very true but with a computer controlled engine it can gain some efficiency by advancing the timing until knock is detected.
I've got mine adjusted to run safely with whatever junk is available.
You're right on with the fact that these trucks don't seem to care what load you put on them. Though if I've got a couple of tons on, or am pulling a heavy trailer I do use first.

alot depends on what type of gearing your running as well. my 460 has a 750 cfm edelbrock with a high rise aluminum intake. when I'm driving down the highway with 3.25 gears i run 2400 RPM's on 17/40x15 ground hawgs at 75 MPH, i get about 12 to 13 a gallon. when i run 4.10 gears, at 75 MPH I'm at 3100 RPM's, I can pull about 9 or 10 mpg.
I have a 94 F250 with the 460. Normal driving, I use 87 octane and never hear a ping. I get about 11-12 mpg around town. If I drive a fair amount of time above 70mpg, the mileage will drop 1 or 2 mpg from my normal 60mph mileage.
When I tow my 8,000# trailer I get about 8-9 mpg on flats. Again higher speed will drop mileage. Hills absolutely kill mileage. I think I got 5mpg on the Grapevine on a 105+ day.
When I tow in cool weather I can use 87 octane. In hot weather I need 91 for hills. I am cheap so I put 87 in one tank for the majority of time flat towing, and I have 91 in the other tank when I expect hills. I just swap tanks when I get to hills. Saves a few bucks on long trips.
Good Luck,

in my 94 f-350 i get about 5-8 in the city and 10-12 on the highway. it don't matter if i am towing my 5000 lbs trailer or not. it seems to get worse if i have my foot in it like other guys have said. but i didn't buy a 460 for mielage i go it for the power. plus i am a big block guy.

its all about love bro
75 4x4 F250 87octanethe best I've got going down the highway is 12.5 mpg. No I do not use this truck for a daily driver but when I need to haul something or pull something ou (like a stump) it will do it,and not fall apart.
And yes it is about the love....I can tell when I hear a big block running ...

Still cheaper than a loan payment, higher insurance and taxes.
