fuel gauges

Heard Dave S. say a long time ago that fixing the gauges was a whole lot easier with the bed off...my bed is off for a paint job on the ol' '89...Question is that I took the gauges out and the plastic pickup tube with the big round screen was broken from both gauges...complete replacement, Ford parts, is about 250.00 for both..Wondering if there might be another fix for these tubes...Would a regular rubber fuel line clamped on in place be alright...Evidently I have not been getting the proper use out of the screens for a long time by the way it acts when the tank has about 6 gallons remaining.....they were both lying in the bottom of the tank...Any advice will be appreciated...

i just finished that project today.I am still dirty as I type this.it was by far easier to take the bed off.10 bolts and the tail light plug. I didnt get new sending units due to the cost of them, but I replaced the broken hose with some fuel resistant hose.I also was having an issue w the low fuel issue thats why I popped the tank.

The fuel hose fix is fine. Just cut a notch in the hose so it can't suck itself to the bottom of tank.

...thanks for the advice...kind of thought the hose might be ok, but wasn't sure about the screens....I guess as long as our main filter is kept clean everything should be fine....thanks again...
