I've got an 85 300 6cyl that runs like a champ around town at surface street speeds but when I get on the expressway and try to run at 55 to 65 it pings non-stop. I run the higher octane fuel (have ever since I bought this truck), I've tried retarding the timing to a point I lose power. Still pings. I tried running a can of Sea Foam through it but noticed no difference.
Recently I put another intake manifold on it since the original was cracked and would whistle like a vaccum leak. There was a lot of carbon build up in the areas that were cracked. Also the manifold I put on it was "ported". I didn't do the porting the guy I bought it from said he did. I really don't know if that would make a difference anyway. Another bit of info is this engine has the TFI distributer.
If anybody has any info what so ever I would greatly appriciate it.
Did you check the new intake to make sure it was straight before you put it on? 4.9s are notorious for warping intakes. The small vacuum leaks from not being true will cause pinging. I've had exactly that happen on at least three 4.9s I've owned.
Thanks for the reply. Yes that was checked and it was good. The one I took off was a mess though. Whew! Cracked, warped, youname it. But the weird thing is as hard as those 4.9's are on the intake manifold new ones are a bear to find.
BTW I just noticed all your toys. Looks like 05 was a good year for you.
If you have all the stock computer controlled carb and dist, you need to make sure the egr is working. If the egr is disconnected, then that will be part or all of your problem.
If you do not have a vacuum connection on your dist, then your timing is totally controlled by the computer. You may want to pull some codes and see if everything is ok. If you do what most people do with this system, you will get a new dist with a vacuum advance and a duraspark II box, and a older type carb with no wires going to it.
