1983 49 States: 119 hp @ 3400 rpm, 250 ft-lb @ 2000 rpm.
1983 Calif: 141 hp @ 3600 rpm, 249 ft-lb @ 2000 rpm.
Per 1983 Ford Light Truck Specifications Book.
It's the torque figures that surprise me...I've alsways been told the 302's power band is much higher the a 300's. Peak torque at 2000 rpm is something I would expect from the 300 with a 302's being somewhere around 3000 rpm.
Horsepower is nothing more than an artificial number to describe how fast an engine can generate torque. It's not really the important number.
The reason I question it is the California number is 141 hp in that post and 49 state numbers are usually a bit higher, not 22 horse lower.
Yea, hp is an artificial number but it serves as a reference point and if calculated according to a set standard, allows a meaningful comparison between engines. Thus, even though the torque figures are similar between the 300 and 302, the HP figure tells the rest of the tale on power. You could do the same thing with another torque reading at peak rpm, but the HP figure is easier to deal with.
