can not reach "parking" position

Hello:

I have the following problem with my 2001 F150 Supercrew truck:
Through the shifter, which is mounted on the steering wheel, I can not reach the "parking" position. It stays between "p" and "r". Therefore it can not start. I have to get underneath the truck to make it reach it. I tried adjusting the cable that goes from the shifter to the transmission, but it does not go any further. Also, after I make it start by the means I have already described, when I put it in "drive", the shifter has a lot of play, perhaps some 6-7 inches of play at the end of the shifter, where the "od" button is located.

Has anyone had this kind of problem? Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you.

On our F250 I had to get to the bottom of the steering column (under the dash) and tighten 2 torx screws. They are on a bracket that connects the shift lever to the cable.
They were loose enough to just about fall out .Very annoying when trying to plow snow and you might get a gear and you might not, but an easy fix.

First you can start the truck, just put it in Neutral. Second I had this same problem and it turned out the whole assembly had loosened up on every joint. I had the dealer tighten it all up since I just happened to be going in for a service anyway. I asked the same question and someone mentioned the 2 bolts but they were fine it the actual linkage that gets loose and needs to be realigned and tightened.

hello:

Well, it turns out that last night I decided to disassemble the steering column to try to find the cause of the problem. And I noticed a place where a screw was supposed to be (at the bottom of the steering column, like Ageel says) and then I noticed a torx screw on the floor of the truck, so I screwed it back on and checked the second screw, which was tight, and everything went fine after that.

From Galaxie641 and Ageel´s posts, it seems this is not a now thing. Perhaps we should put some security washers on the head of the screw to avoid this in the future.

Thank you for your help, everybody.
