'96 F150, 4.2L. Okay, so i go to replace the MAF yesterday. Well, when I start to take the nuts off of the MAF housing (can't just take the safety torx off the MAF component because Ford safety proofed the heads with putty) the whole STUD starts to unscrew from the plastic housing instead of the nut just coming off. So now, there is NO WAY to get the nuts off of there. When i try to screw the studs back into the plastic housing, all they are doing is eating up the plastic and now they are stripped out. WHAT THE HECK!!! Surely I am not the only one to have this problem?? Can anyone advise?? Were those nuts reverse threaded in the first place maybe (righty loosey?) and thats why the studs came out? Thanks.
The plastic piece you are trying to remove is not meant to be removed. The mass air flow sensor assembly includes the tube assembly that the plastic piece sits on. Undo the clamps and remove the assembly, if you're looking to replace it the old one (core) must be returned complete.
Sorry! Typo....its a '98. I know the plastic piece is not "meant" to be removed, but the nuts that hold the MAF assembly on need to be removed. When I was trying to back the nuts off the whole bolt turned, stripped out, and the plastic assembly came off. I am going to try and epoxy the bolts back into the plastic this evening and try to back the nuts off again. I just am not sure if the nuts are reverse threaded and should be backed off by turning to the right? Maybe thats why the anchor bolts in the plastic part came out. This probably makes no sense.
