I am looking at a 2001 Crew Cab Long Box F350. It is 4wd with the 7.3. What are you guys with simailar trucks getting for fuel milage? Unsure of the gearing but it is an automatic. Thanks for your help.
I don't have a similar truck so there's no use me posting my quite spectacular mpg averages, but if you're looking for economy out of a hard working truck you best forget the 4 wheel drive and driving fast.

I know that but right now I am just looking at diesel power as opposed to my v10 and what my options are. I don't use it for work purposes and only used my 4wd 3 times over the winter even though we had about 12 feet of snow.
I have a similar truck, but it is a 4x4 250 short box with 3.73. I am getting 15.5 mpg average town (if I drive conservatively) and around 17 on the highway at freeway speeds.

Then why bother with the added expense of 4 x 4, because it's macho? Whether it is engaged in actual 4 wheel drive or not you're still turning over and carrying around more weight that you have any use for and that eats up power, which in turn sucks up fuel.
I have the same truck with 4" lift, and 35" tires. With my Superchips tuner on the middle setting (best MPG) I can get around 20-21 hwy and 16-17 city.

This is pretty impressive for a 4 x 4 considering the best I've ever done hwy is 24 mpg, city 22 mpg. I've not tried hwy since the last time I hit the 22 city a few weeks ago but fixin' to find out Friday. I very carefully calculated it, and I'm wondering what I changed to get that 22 city. Well actually I do know what I changed. The fuel filter and unplugged the fuel heater. But how can that account for at least a 2 mpg improvement city?
I'm just kicking tires at this point. With the extra cost of diesel (70 cents here today) it may not save me anything.
Diesel fuel would need to be nearly double in price for it to be economical for me to have a gas truck of equal capabilites, without the longevity of diesel.
