Fuel Tank Sizes?

Hi guys,

I am new to the forums, a friend and I just picked up an '86 F-150 XL, 302 V8. We had the breaks re-done completely, the real axel replaced. We are curious as to how large the fuel tanks are. It has a front and rear fuel tank and when trying to fill the front, it only added 5 gallons of gas, so i'm curious how much old gas is in the tank and what would be the best way to get that old gas out, so we dont gum up the engine running it. Any thoughts or answers are very appreciated.

I am getting a tune up for it soon, and i'm hoping it will purr nicely.

Awesome,

Thanks for the info, its a short bed. I think i'm going to have to siphon the old gas out of the front tank. Does anyone know of general places to dispose of old gas, like you would with oil. I'm not to big on dumping I'm in Washington State.
Also, my engine is backfiring a bit from the exhaust pipes being rusty, does this do much actual damage to the engine or parts within? I'm going to get it replaced, but I would like to know if i should restrain myself from running the engine if it would hurt the engine.

Figure 19 fron and rear on long bed, and 16 fron 19 rear on a short bed, unless yours is one of those special fleet purchase trucks, than could have a 16 front on a long bed, or a rear 31 gallon.

133" wheelbase = Long bed, two 19 gallon tanks.

117" wheelbase = shortbed. Front tank 16.5 / rear tank 19.

Mix the old gas in with some new and use it in lawnmowers. If it doesn't smell too bad leave it in the truck and add new. Maybe put some dry gas in the tank also.
