polarizing generator

hey guys,i have a 58 f100,292.i took the generator off to paint the engine and generator,put it all back together,cranked it a few times over a few weeks.then battery was weak,had to jump start.got to thinking maybe i hooked the two wires on top of generator up wrong,swapped terminals ,did fine another few weeks,battery weak again.now i am wondering if anyone nows which wire goes where on top of generator,two wires come from regulator,and how to correctly polarize generator if i had it wrong.thanks. stony.

"F" to "F", "A" to "A". Terminals are marked at both ends, on the reg and gen. Do you have an ohmmeter or continuity tester?

I also would like the information, yes I have
an ohmmeter. Is it done while the engine is
running or off? Must be off it onley the
ohmmeter is used

Is this also called flashing the regulator?
I always heard the engine had to be running?
But thats why I am asking questions

I got this from mtflat awhile back;

Polarizing a Ford Generator

I can outline the procedure for polarizing the thing. With the engine off, at the regulator, remove the field (F) wire and briefly touch it to the batt (B) connection. You should see a small bluish spark. Re-connect the field wire and you're done. This is per the shop manual.

Do not use a jumper wire - you can cause damage.

Trouble for googling for the info, the older 3 brush gen's with a cutout use a different procedure for polarizing and you'll find a bunch of confusing info.

thanks.bobby.that info helped and i did have the wires backwards.going to get all my new tires mounted and balanced tomorrow,get new park light lenses and then need to get insurance and register it.can't wait to drive it everyday.thanks again. stony
