Generator/Regulator Polarization

Generator/Regulator Polarization
I think I may have burnt out my generator. Just going to go ahead and replace it. Now this is a pretty much stock 223 1960 F100. What is the proper way to polarize the system. I keep getting conflicting information. Do I not need to worry about the generator and just polarize at the regulator or vice versa or both. Does anyone have a real answer lol.
I don't know if it's a positive or negative ground I just know its 12 volt and whatever came in a 1960.
