I have a 84 f150 with a 351 and money is kinda tight but i was wondering if there is any cheep way to up my hp considerably i have a max of 500 to spend. thanks
Nitrous is the cheapest, and easiest way to make hp, and can be very reliable IF installed and used properly. You can get a Sniper kit for around $370 and is asjustable from 50 to 150 hp.
I DON'T recommend this for a high mileage engine though.
Otherwise your basic mods will work. K&N air filter, headers, and dual exhaust will help some. If it currently has a 2bbl carb on it, swap it for a 4bbl intake and carb setup. If you have enough money left after that, stab in a small cam. All these should add a easy 50 hp or better.
It depends on your setup right now? If you have a four barrel, I'd say go for an intake manifold, and some headers and dual exhaust. If a two barrel, buy a 4 barrel and a new intake. Something around an Edelbrock Performer, not bigger than stock just better design and no emissions stuff. I like the 600 Edelbrock carb on my 351, good throttle response and still big enough to feed it. When I went to a 750 Carter (same carba s Edelbrock BTW), throttle response was lost and no gain to top end. Start with one thing, in case something goes wrong as it always does when one is short on spending cash.
I didn't know you could run nitrous with a pretty much stock engine. I just swapped (or still in the process) my two barrel and manifold for a holly 4V 650 cfm carb and edelbrock performer manifold, do you think i could run nitrous with that setup? Right now I'm disassembling all the emissions crap. All the wires and vacuum hoses look like spagetti. Is there any tricks to know when i'm putting the man & carb on? Thanks

You can run nitrous on a stock engine if your careful. You can't use a lot (around a 50 shot is safe) and it MUST be set up right. If it doesn't have a lot of miles on it (less than 75k) you should be safe. If you have a 302 out of a mustang (1985 - 1993) you can go all the way up to about a 175 shot because they have forged pistons.
15 second 1979 f-100 - 302, 3.70's, Powertrax Locker, MSD box, 2300 stall, headers, 4bbl. SOON to be 14 second 79.
I would rather PUSH a Ford than drive a Chevy!
If you are going to run nitrous, make sure you have an electric fuel pump for steady reliable fuel delivery. Check out a few sources of info from performance mags, Summit, etc for tips and pointers.
