Howdy, I have a 2003 F350 Diesel with about 120.000 miles on it. I have been having a repeated problem. When the engine is warmed up and the truck has been on the road and then I slow down and stop, e.g. stop light, sometimes, but not always, the motor will seem to shudder and then surge. I have to keep a heavy foot on the brake, just in case. Also, on a couple of rare occasions when I am driving at a low speed or idle, the motor has completely quit. This has only happened a couple of times.
Lastly, when the motor is warm and I am leaving a stop, sometimes, but not always, I will apply the accelerator and nothing will happen. If I press the pedal all the way down and hold it for several seconds eventually the motor will start to pick up and I can get underway. Makes for an interesting experience when you are making a left turn across traffic and lose your acceleration.
I am replacing fuel filters twice a year, about 4,000 miles apart, but that doesn't seem to help. Any suggestions?
First think I would check is the fuel pressure in the heads under load. Diesel's need to have a good steady supply of fuel. You may have a clogged screen in the fuel tank, the fuel pump might be getting weak, or both.
Stalling problems typically point to the cps going bad.
Do you know anyone with a scan tool to check for codes?
There is a recall out on the CPS(camshaft position sensor). Any dealer near you will be able to change it out. That would be the first thing I would try since it doesn't cost you anything.
You may have a bad throttle pedal. A freind of mine had about the same problem your having, he had to replace the whole throttle pedal assembly. He said you can't just buy the sending unit for it. Like trike1946 said, check your codes first! Someone else will chime in soon with alittle more knowledge of your problem. BTW welcome to FTE...
