The RS exhaust manifold on my 1972 F250 390 is "ticking". I have replaced gaskets twice and then replaced the manifolds with a new OEM cast iron set. Now, the right side is leaking again. Does anyone have a cure for this chronic problem? How difficult is it to remove the manifolds? Any tricks to loosening bolts that might be overtight or rusted? Last thing I want to do is snap one off. Many thanks.
Been there. Don't rush. I learn that the hard way. I messed up the head, and it was cheaper to buy a used 390 then get the head replaced. Search the forum here and the FE forum. from what i was told, get some BP Blaster and a tourch. If you take your time, you can avoid a lot of hassel.
We used the PB Blaster. Sprayed the bolts down everyday for 4 or 5 days before trying to remove them. They all came out ok, they still took a little elbow grease but that stuff worked great! On the installation, we used basic gaskets (heat shields) from NAPA and anti-seize on both sides of the heat shield and on all bolts/nuts. So far so good. We had the same issue, right side, front area.
Thanks guys for the input. Must display my ignorance. I don't recognize "PB Blaster". Is this a brand of penetrating lubricant? Sounds like the procedure is to soak the bolts very well with PB Blaster then use heat to expand the manifold away from the bolts before CAREFULLY trying to back them out. Any thoughts on how much pressure to apply when backing out the bolts? My inclination would be to use a breaker bar and go carefully trying to feel any resistance. What is the procedure if a bolt is snapped off? Again, thanks for you valuable input
On the one FE that I have, that has a problem with exhaust leaks, 428 in my Galaxie, I used the heat shields from FloPro with no gaskets. It has beed about 5 years now without leaking, before them, I changed gaskets every year. PB Blaster is a brand of penetrating oil.
