New Ex!

Hey guys,

I just picked up a '02 excursion 4x4 with the 7.3 PS. I have lusted after these trucks for years now, and I finally found one.

It has some minor issues, but nothing I shouldn't be able to handle. I have searched the forums for a couple of these issues, but still have a question or two.

There is a slight exhaust leak around the turbo that I can't find by looking for soot or feeling for exhaust. Is there any common problems in that area?

There is a "fluttery" tone with the exhast pipe, and no muffler. The previous owner installed a aftermarket 4" exhaust of unknown origin. Could the flutter be related to the exhaust leak at the turbo or lack of muffler?

The dome light does not shut off till around 10 mph and the door ajar warning lamp does not go out. I read on the forums that cleaning the switches out and re-lubing them usually fixes this. Is the switch in the door? I think that is what I read but the post wasn't very clear to me.

There is a clunk on the drivers side front axle when a hit a bump. The local dealer says the sway bar link is bad, not the bushing. The mounting hardware is tight, the bushing looks perfect, and the sway bar link looks in perfect shape. I don't think the dealership knows what they are talking about. I am unable to get any unsual movement by jacking up the front end. Any ideas?

Last of all, I want to add a lift and tires to this beast. I do not like the look that seems to be common on some full size trucks where the front end sits higher than ther rear. I am looking at the skyjacker 8" lift and a set of 38" Swamper SSR's. Does anyone have any experience with these, or the lift? Any hidden pitfalls that may await me in doing this lift?

Thanks in advance!

-Chuck

Welcome to FTE chuck. BTW, we do need pics of ur new ride. Also as for the lift, i kno if you go over 8 inchs or so, youll have to redo your drive shafts as they will be to short.

So would 8" of lift require new driveshafts? Or is that barely enough?

Here is a snapshot I took just for this forum, I kinda wanted to wait till I was done with all the work before I started boasting...

A little embarrassed by the window tinting as well. One of my first fixes to be done.

Chuck,

I have the same issue for my 2001 V10 Limited. It's Green. Love it! Been wanting one for years!

I have the same door ajar issue and the same sound from the suspension but mine is on the passenger's side. Dealer check told me it was the sway bar too. Having it replaced completely for about $250.

Door Ajar? Will try WD40 route then will replace all switches if that doesn't work (supposedly, total of $300.).

I'm looking at replacing a couple of Coils on my plugs...besides that, she's a dream.

I also have an electrical shore and my driver's side running board light won't go off even after the truck is off.

The dealer I dealt with is a louse. I know for a fact he screwed my on the inspection so I'm having a personal friend of my father's who is a Cetified Mechanic who works for the municipal bus line. He's going to go over my truck and take care of all the problems.

I too don't like the lower rear look, though when I lived in San Diego, that seemed to be all the rage a few yars ago...they were called "Pre-Runners" I believe.

I used to have an 87' F-250 with a custom 12" Skyjacker Lift with and re-arched rear Mercedes Benz Truck springs. It rode on 42"s. She was 8'7" tall! All black with Lund Racerback, Sunvisor, a worked Mustang 5.0 with Headers and Flowmasters (no cats).

For my Ex:
I'm going to lift the rear a bit. But I'm going to keep the rest stock. I definately want to get tires that will fill the wheel wells. Maybe 305's on 20"s.

I wanted a PowerStroke myself, but I'll save that for my SuperDuty.

Good luck with yours.

The reason I dislike the window tint is the flames and stars in it. The picture doesn't really show it well, but it looks a bit silly in my opinion. Not to mention blocking the rear veiw mirrors quite a bit at night.

Nice truck Bronco. T answer your question anything OVER a 6 inch lift will require driveline modifications which will add significantly to your cost. But if you want tires larger than 35 inch you will have to pay as thats as big as you can go with a 6 inch lift. I argree about the tint; little cheesy for my tastes but obviously it rocked someones world at some point

I am not too fond of the "bling" 20" rims either, but the wife likes 'em so I guess the issue on the rims is settled.

I heard from a guy at work that used to own a lifted X that 8" lift won't need read driveshaft work (barely), but will need the front re-tubed. Anyone know if this is true? I bought the lift and tires yesterday so hopefully I get them this weekend.

It is more than likely your swaybar bushings. Mine didnt look bad, but I changed the bushings out before I tried new links and the sound has been gone for a while now.

As far as you exhaust leak, go over to the 7.3 forum and search or ask there, someone will be able to help you figure it out. IMO that is the best forum on FTE, no offense to the X guys!!!!
