Cant get no spark!

Cant get no spark!
Hey i posted this over in the straight six forum but no replies so Ill lay it down here too. Since this is an older technology forum.
I just put a rebuilt 300 in my 85 f 150 I retroactivly installed a contact type ignition. the reason being I like the appearence over the wires out the *** duraspark. I eventualy plan to install a petronix so I aint afraid of technology.
The problom is that I cant get no spark from either the coil lead or the spark wires.
I hoked up the "little black wire" from my contacts distributor to the negitive side of my coil. Like my 292.
Ran a frame ground to the negitive side of the coil.
Ran my switched hot to the postive side of the coil.
The only thing I found weird was on my coil it said "external resistor required"
What is an external resistor? why do I need one? how do I hook it up?
What is the "Little black wire" on my distributor?
Any advice would be great you guys have helped alot in the past.

Hot wire (switched ignition)to pos side of coil.Neg wire to dist.Not grounded to the frame or anywhere else.Thats why there is no fire to dist.Cant help with the resistor.The little black wire in the distributor goes to the neg side of coil

Since someone already mentioned the hot wire, here it is...
D7AZ-12250-A .. Resistor Wire-Ignition Switch to Coil (Motorcraft DY 213-A) ~ Used 1976/89, and every car & truck has one.
49.50" long / color coded red w/green stripes.
THIS IS NOT THE SAME AS THE ONE USED 1960/72.
