big smoke

I have been getting a lot of white smoke on start up lately so I got a meter to check the glow plugs and all read 0 to 2 with the meter set on x10 except for two pins under the same plug. I get no reading at all on the two. Nothing! The needle on the meter don't move at all! Could it be that two plugs went at the same time? Seems strange but I have no clue as to what it might be. It runs fine so can it be the wires going to the two plugs?

There are 2 plugs on each VC and they should be oriented like this:

G I O I G

G= GP
I= Injector
O= ground (I think)

The GP's should ohm out at about 1.6
If They were 0 like you said above they could be bad. Also you can check under the valve covers to see if the harness is burnt or the connections are burnt.

The thing that makes me wonder is the GP's that have a 0 or near 0 reading will have to move the needle on the meter to the zero. The two in question don't move the needle at all like a open circuit can this be bad GP's or wires or both? When I put the meter on brand new GP's the needle will jump to 0.

Neal, you are correct on the pin lay out. As I read what you are saying is that you have one (1) connector and both pin (s) 1 & 5 are open. Yes that can and will happen. Also, inspect the opposite connector for burn or other type of damage.

If the open pins are on the UVCG you will need to pull that valve cover so that just the wiring to those GP's can be checked as well as GP's w/o the harness connected.

Correct, do what Kawa said. By pulling the VC you will be able to determine if the ones giving you a zero reading have a bad GP or bad harness. I believe you need a reading of atleast 1.2 or 1.3 and above (not sure though but close).

Ok thanks, I find it strange that two pins in the same plug would go at the same time so maybe the wires. But both wires at the same time? O well Ill see when I take the covers off. Thanks
