So 2 weeks ago I am on a trip and the engine light comes on. I take it to the dealer while on vacation and they replace the EGR valve and gas pedal assembly. Yesterday I am on my way back up north and the engine light is back on again? Now the truck is big time sluggish off the line, major lag and black smoke on take off under load. Other than that it seems to start and run ok. Any ideas what's going on? I am wondering if the dealer mis-diagnosed the problem 2 week ago? Sorry about the complaining but the probs seem to be starting again with my 6.0 on a much more frequent basis! My truck is an 04 6.0 with 53k miles on it...appreciate any input
I was disappointed to hear (on another forum) that Ford purchased a bad lot of EGR valves. There are quite a few other things it could be. Do you have access to a code reader? Maybe at an autoparts store?
ive had the same problem for a while it seems to do the same than the problem just dissapears and comes back again. ive also had white smoke to. any idea what it can be??
Well guys just got the Ex back from the shop AGAIN! I am starting to get sick of these continual problems again! Turns out that my 3 week old EGR valve failed AGAIN! What is Ford doing? I am really getting discouraged with this truck, it's paid off and I love it! I have 53k miles on it. I cannot keep visiting the dealer this often and especially when I am traveling and out of town. I get a couple 3 to 6 good months and then bam something breaks and on and on.....Well hopefully this EGR valve will last longer than 3 weeks!! Sorry for the rant just getting sick of the issues! I did take it to a different dealer this 2nd time so hopefully the tech has things figured out correctly! One good thing to report, I didn't have to pay another $100 dollar deductible! Woo Hoo, I guess the part was still warrantied since it failed so quickly. I am having these lingering thoughts about that new Dmax 2500 Suburban, and they wont go away!
It looks like you have an '04. Try pulling the plug. I did at 4,000 miles and my '04 was flawless. I pulled the plug on the EGR Valve and used fuel additive at each and every fuel up.

Good luck
I have thought about it, but with my luck with this truck it will probably make the check engine light come on again??? Do you ever get codes? Did you unplug it with the engine off so it would stay closed?
If your 6.0 is not California emissions then your CEL should not come on. EGR Valve closes when you turn the truck off. Be sure the key is in the off position as well. The best time to to do this is with a new EGR Valve since it has little to no residue that could make it stick open. Thereby, being as confident as possible that it is completely closed.
I also, taped over the male and female ends in order to keep the road junk out.
Remember. If you always do what you've always done. You will always get what you always got. So if you have had a number of EGR Valve issues, try something different.
The EGR's are not made by Ford. Ford is standing behind their repair by CONTINUING to replace the bad EGR's. Ford will ensure that you will get a good one, don't be too quick to talk other makes yet. Don't you think Dodge and Chevy may have just as many quality problems from their suppliers?
My opinion would be to stick with it until you get a good one. I personally wouldn't unplug it until I got a tuner that properly disables it in the control programs.

WHo supplies the EGR's? International? That could explain a lot!
good one Greg.
$100 is worth (insert sarcasm here) 3/4 of a tank of fuel!
You know... I've noticed that it seems the peripherals are usually the culprit, it's either a sensor or some cheezy part that makes for bad karma with this techo wonder of an engine.
The egr is part of the emissions equiptment so Ford should not be charging you the $100 deductable if that was the only problem!
You might be able to get your original $100 deductable refunded!
Actually I had my gas pedal assembly replaced at that dealer visit too! I already was thinking that, but my $100 went towards the other repair not the EGR valve! Yeah $100 bucks is 1/2 a tank of diesel!
