Hi i've got a 84 f250 6.9 diesel and the fast idle doent idle fast long enough. I want to put a toggle switch on so i can keep it idleing longer.... how do u do that, my dads 83 had one when we bought it and i wanted one for my truck. pleas any help will be welcomed
The fast idle is controlled by temperature. I'm not sure how and if you can adjust the time frame the fast idle is activated but you can control the RPM it is when the fast idle is activated.
Also you may get more replies by putting this in the pre-power stroke forum just a few forums down.
Look at the top front of engine at the throttle linkage. There is a solenoid there that kicks the throttle open. You could hot wire this solenoid, but if you do, I would disconnect the original wiring. If you just tap into the original wiring, then besides the idle speed, you will also be back feeding a wire to the injection pump that advances the timing. You probably don't want this for extended periods.
Also, as with most throttle kicker solenoids, once you activate it, it does not have enough power to open the throttle, but it does have enough to hold it open, so you have to push the throttle open a little bit after you hit the switch.
ok but my dads old 83 had a toggle switch allong the sterring wheel that u switched up and would idle fast all day if u left it on i was currious if anyone had something like this. my truck idles fast enough but not long enough.... any help is thanked
That's what I was talking about in my previous post. Mount a switch, and run the wire from the switch to the throttle kicker solenoid on the throttle linkage.
