Hail Damage

Well.. we got a good hail storm in Central Texas this morning, my hood and roof got pumelled and have dozens of little dents.. even have some on body. How do they repair this type of damage and will my insurance go up if I file a claim?

My friends daughter's Mustang just got totalled due to same. He was going to keep it and make her drive it like it was for punishment because she was somewhere she was not suposed to be when it happened. (About 100 miles from college) He got the word from insurance and decided to get another with the insurance payoff.

We have paintless dent repair guys around here. They'd probably be cheaper than a body shop and they come to you. The one I've used says he can pull any dent that doesn't have a crease. I watched him once, and he a setup like the guy on TV's Dent king, but much more professional and no hot glue. It did a great job on my tailgate that was accidentally dropped on a trailer jack.

My insurance setup an appointment for me at a local body shop on Friday, guess I will find out then. I got a door ding removed from a paintless dent repair guy, it was like $40, but my roof and hood have dozens of dents. May be a good excuse to get the Cervini's hood I've been wanting.

Glad you didn't have any damage! It was the worst hail storm I've ever experienced.

Wow. That is crazy. Haven't had the box on either to see what else has been damaged. I'm truly sorry bud.

A friend of mine had his 08 Burban and 06 Lexus damaged due to the storms that came through a little over a month ago. He lives in Leander and is just about 15 minutes from me.

typically comp claims dont cause your rates to go up. I know I have had several hail damage claims without increases. All but one time I took the appearance claim check and lived with the damage due to the fact that most of the dents were on the roof where you couldnt see it.

My 99 Crew Cab got pelted by golfball size hail 4 months after I bought it. The insurance company recommended a few places, and all of them wanted to replace some parts (hood, roof) and fill the other dents and repaint.

Fortunately someone recommended Dent Doctor to me. They are a national franchise and have a lifetime guarantee on their work. It took them about a week to do the entire job. That was in Oct of 1998. The repair was perfect and has remained so to this day.

I would recommend Dent Doctor or any other national franchise that has a good BBB record. Ask around and take your time finding a place. DO NOT go with a fly by night guy that comes into town to do repairs and then chases the next hail storm. Yes, there are a lot of "hail chasers" out there. The "chasers" will get to your truck faster than the franchise place will, but it is worth the wait for someone that is local and will be around if you have problems.

My experience with Hail is that the insurance is going to pay whatever the body shop says it will cost to fix it MINUS your deductible. You can use the money for whatever you deem appropriate. If you own your rig, you can buy a new floor for your house for all they care. If you dont own it and the bank still has rights to the title, then they will make the check payable to you and the bank. Or you and the body shop, or all of the above. If you and the bank own it, you can apply the money to the principle, but not to the new hardwood in the kitchen. Another thing you should check to make sure you are covered by is loss of vehicle value after a "damage" most or some...insurance policies have clauses to compensate you for the loss of value that your vehicle may retain after it gets a "HAILSTORM" tattoo all across its carfax ***! You can really rack up with aftermarket (IE: your hood)stuff in the case of a hail storm!

Most insurance companies will not hit you for an "act of God".

I have heard of people using dry ice to pop the dents out on their vehicles. Do a Google search for "dent removal you tube". I don't know how well that works, but there is another video where the guy uses canned air to freeze the dent, and then a hair dryer to get the metal to contract.

I used this method to get a small dent out on the fender on my van. The metal was not creased, just pushed in a little. It worked real well.

Alot of insurance carriers have alotted amounts they pay for pdr(paintless dent repair)of the body panels. ie- 10+ nickel sized dents in a hood $250. At least this is the way they deal with alot of these claims in il and ind. your deductible will still apply and they normally will give a little more for access& trim removal or partial R&I (remove and install)but they only give it once for each panel.

I would bet it will be well over your deductible. 5 yrs ago I had one dent in the hood of an f150, took it to state farm claims office they found 3 more in the roof that I hadnt even seen. I got a check for 1200 bucks.

BTW I dont think I would want paintless dent repair done on hail damage, the smaller dimples will appear and disappear on the own in the temp changes. In fact that f150 had to be cold in order to see any of the dents in it. The bigger ones will not come out completely, but they still move and become less noticable(unless overcourse they are craters!!LOL)Maybe it works in mild climates that dont have big temp swings. IMHO once that metal has been deformed and reformed it has lost alot of its little strength it had. If it continues to move, even a little bit, with temp swings a guy could end up with cracked paint around the previous hail dents which would lead to rust pockets. Just my thoughts on it.

Damn that sucks.. I was out chasing that storm all night.. Had 5 sightings in Bell County, 3 in Williamson.. I hit as big as baseball size hail but not damage to the super duty.. I went over it with a fine tooth comb.. Unless black hides dents REALLY well I can't see em.. I figured my fiberglass hood would be broken..

Hope you get it fixed bud
