All you guys that have switched your stock thermo to a 203 deg, did it make much of a noticeable difference in engine performance? Did your dash gauge read any higher? Roy.
I couldn't feel any difference once I installed the 203* stat. The gauge on the dash is a glorified idiot light, It wont move like a regular gauge. Didn't feel any more performance either. Sorry, I did it because they say my engine likes it hot.
Just thought of this, when my water pump was leaking, I took it to David at DI Performance and he said even though my pump was leaking, it would probably never overheat; simply because the cooling system on our trucks is so efficient that it just wouldn't, even with a leak! (he was right btw) In the years that he's been working on diesels (mainly Powerstrokes) he's never seen one overheat unless it had the short stem 203 thermostat.
In plain english, I think that with the efficiency of the 7.3s cooling system, it wouldn't do much. I'll head over there next week, have them hook up the NGS, and we'll see.
I know on the big trucks we swap out the 195 for a 210 stat..recommended by cat..don't know any diff's till you work the truck..when the temps are up and your pulling a hill.. we could feel it pull better..she also throws a lot better heat out the heater...DD guy's wont feel any power gains..just better heat.like said above..the 7.3 has a very good cooling system.if your pulling loads all the time..you should feel a little better power when she is pulling hills...
if it ain't broke.......don't fix it! Mainly the reason I haven't swapped mine out yet. If it ever fails.....or when I get tired of putting additive in my green stuff and make the changeover, I'll have the stocker 195 in.
Put a 203 in mine, and if your in a stockish truck go for it, a little quieter, little less smoke... but I am going to pull mine and put it in the wifes X and run a stocker... With the injectors and such my oil temp is starting to get in the 220-225-230 range... Water temp stays right at 200 but...
I just put mine in this past weekend. I seem to have slightly higher EGTs (maybe 25-50) over what I had been running, and the truck seems to have quieted down some. That's it.
