Stupid question about belt replacement
The serp belt in my 93 has started squealing a ton at idle. It used to only happen when it was damp outside, but now it's pretty much all the time.
I've pretty much decided from my searches that I'll be grabbing a Gatorback belt for the replacement. Seems a lot of people that have similar sqeals find it works best.
Oddly enough, this will be the first time I've changed a serp belt unassisted. Although I've watched my gramps and uncles do it when I was young, I never really paid much attention to it.
The proceedure I understand it to stick a socket on the tensioner and pull it back so the belt can be removed. Do I need to remove the fan and clutch before I can do this?
Installation just seems the reverse. Fish it around the pulleys correctly and let the tensioner rest on it again.
Anything I need to know?
Thanks all.
If you give use what engine you have im sure someone has the diagram as to where the belt runs. Or if if your truck still has the diagram on the front radiator support. Or it may be in the owners manual if you still have it.
Good Luck
You mentioned that the belt squeals more when it is damp out. This could also be that your tensioner is wearing. Mine did the same thing, thought it was the belt, changed it and it still happened. Found that the tensioner was not loading enough. Changed it and about 2 week later squeal was back. Found that the idler pulley was worn out also. Changed it and all has been good.
Changing the belt will be a breeze.
If you don't have a diagram under the hood for the belt routing, let me know. I can scan one from my hanes book.
