We were changing the complete spark wire set in my F250 -70 this morning, bc some of the old ones had cracks in the rubber. After changing two (replaced one-by-one on same place carefully) we tried to start it up.
It somewhat backfired (minor) but didn't want to start up.
We completed the change of all, and tried again.. same result.
It does have sparks in every plug, it gets fuel.. but it won't start up and run. Just ignites and tries to run..
We looked inside the distributor and the coal ? (I don't know the english word for it) -the thing in the middle.. anyway -were not broken just a little burnt.
Does anyone have a clue what happened and what we should look for?
Thanks in advance for any recommendations,
Rebecka
Had the same problem on my 67. I know you said you have spark but just for giggles try this...
Pull the boots back and plug in wires so you know for sure you have a good strong spark, new boots on some brands create a suction and when you plug them in it pulls back a bit not giving you a real strong spark...
We actually pulled apart the stifts a bit from the boots, making sure of the connection.. but I forgot to mention that we also put back the old wires and now they dont work either!!
We are thinking the coil might got an overbooze.. ??
I think we have to go back and check the carbon brush again..
what do you do if that is broken? Can you change just the brush?
The "rotor" is the object in the center of distributor that goes around. Make sure the carbon in center of distributor cap is okay, if it's hurt/gone then you need to replace the cap. Strange how it just happen to fail the moment you replaced the wires. You mention it still gets spark? Did you use a screwdriver in end of one of the wires to see? Stick screwdriver in end of wire, place near something metal(just a small gap, not touching) and crank motor. You should get a nice spark, if not then you have issues with either cap, rotor or coil.
had the same problem once. It ended up being the points. I bought from a "zone" location and still had problems. Then I went to the checkered place and those fixed the issue. I had intemittent spark till the points were changed out.
the carbon brush can't be bought separate it comes with the rotor. for the costs of points i would definately look at that also, not to suggest playing parts changer but it's only a couple bucks and then you'll know you have new points.
I am astonished. The only thing I can think of is that your distributor is not tighened down and you rotated it slightly when you changed the wires, thus altering the ignition timing.
this sounds like exactly what im going through i have a 69 f100 changed everything though plugs, wires, coil, cap, distributur, solenoid, voltage regulator, and mine wont star i get spark just no ignition it will crank all day just wont start looking for a new wiring harnes my truck as been jerry rigged way to much lol let me know how it goes ill keep you up to date also good luck
I will keep you updated how it goes. Didn't have time this weekend to keep on researching, but I will check the carbon brush when I get to the garage next time.
