I an new to Linux, running Ubuntu. Trying to load Mp3s from a thumbdrive and play them with Rhythmbox, the pre installed player. It wont add them to the library, and wont play them, seems to need some add-ons, but it looks for them finds them, and still wont work. I think there is something I need to do here that Im not doing, anyone help me thru this?
What flavor of Linux are you toying with? I'm running UBUNTU 8.04 and Open Suse 10 on two different machines, both will play mp3s through the Kaffine media program. Ubuntu has a down load for a self extracting codec pack, it'll play every file I throw at it. For Open Suse I had to manually download the add-ons.
There are also several programs that allow you to emulate Windows programs through Linux, the one I can think of off the top of my head is WinonLin. Basically it would allow you to run Windows media player, winamp, real player, or any other windows supported media player in a emulation mode through Linux.
If all else fails you could try a program called Virtual Box. Through Virtual Box you can install Windows (or any other OS) on your Linux machine. Basically you allocate a small portion of your hard disk space for Windows to install through the Virtual Box program. Once installed you simply open the Virtual Box program and turn on your Windows Virtual machine. It boots up and runs just like normal windows. You could simply drag and drop you mp3s into Windows media player and enjoy.
I have Ubuntu 7.somthin and I use a program called Audacious, it is sort of like winamp used to be, which is simple which is all I need. I start it up and add files to it, set it on random and let it play away.
I added 5000 mp3s at once one time and it took it about 60seconds to load them all and I had random tunes for a few weeks after that!
If I just want to hear one mp3 at a time, I left Totem as the default player for when I doubleclick something to listen too, ya know for renaming and organizing purposes. That way it doesn't abolish whatever list I have in Audacious.
I just store all my mp3s on my hard-drive and I am always adding to them when I get a new CD
Click the little APplications menu, and find Add&Remove Programs, open it up and search ford VideoLan or VLC, that should play most audio and video files. Alternatively, search for MP3 or Codec, which should get you going
There is a player on there, rythembox. I dont quite understand; should any player work ok, or is there some code (codec) that I need to download in order for any of them to work?
