i have the driveline pulled from under the truck ( 91 ranger 3.0 5spd 2wd) and am replacing the ujoints, any special tricks or tips for this, i have had it out for 2 days now and am needing my truck going again asap. ( i would have already taken it to a shop but i have aprox. $2.07 to my name untill payday next week...), i have tried everything i can think of, the socket and hammer, the bench vise, an even bigger hammer....., these things are in there tight enough that it broke a 10 pound sledge and didnt even phase them... Getting to the point that i am stumped as i can get, and ready to coat this thing in jet fuel and throw a match...... Thanks for any help in advance.
You removed the clips right? I can't imagine breaking a 10 pound sledge hammer over u-joints.
yeah, the clips came off with a little coaxing and a bucket of pb nutbuster.
if i can find my digi camera, i will put up a pic or 2, and perhaps a pic of the remains of the sledge....
it was one of those HAVE to change them moments, the joints are almost to the point of locking up. 140K on the factories and the guy i bought it from wasn't two bright ( random example, the driverside front shock is held on with a ubolt. stud snapped off. Found this out after i bought it. Then there was the camber adjuster.... it came out of a honda and was very poorly welded solid and jammed in there.....) something tells me he never changed the ujoints and treated the truck like crap...
Might need a press to do it. At work we use a balljoint/u-joint tool and airgun to press out. Got any friends that work on cars? Someone should have something. If you lived close by I'd help you out, but you'd spend more in gas than a whole new driveshaft to drive here

no kidding...
right now i am borrowing an 01 ranger (4.0 4x4 *cringe* automatic...) from a relative until i can get mine done. This truck has been abused. I am not sure what he did to it but it gets around 9-12 mpg driving with a light foot on the interstate doing the normal 65 with cruse ( and this is with NO mods to it what so ever...) . major gas $$ there...

Reason: i can't spell
It was difficult to press out UJs on my 2001 Ranger.
I have dual DS under my aero. First pice is made of steel, rear - of aluminium. So easy to press out UJs from steel DS (+some WD-40), but aluminium corrozion is something terrible.... and heating is prohibited.....
i guess i will dig out the credit cards * god save me* and try renting a balljoint puller. give that a shot. will let ya know how it goes. so far the BFH and vise havent done a thing so here goes...

Reason: to many videogames. BFG and BFH are not quite the same thing.
usually hammer works well. But there is spray like WD-40 but for aluminium and cooper. I do not remember how it is called. Aluminium corozzion exists too. But aluminium oxid does not destroy metall. But it looks steel parts inside aluminium and heating may not be used, becouse it is easy to melt it.
When I did my u joints on my Explorer my little 12 ton press made quick work of it. You will need an assortment of larger short 1/2" drive sockets though.
