A friend of mine dragraces an early '90s mustang with 302 and stock fuel injection. He wants to pull all the fuel injection off and go with an edelbrock intake and Holley carb.Does he have to change heads for this or will the stock heads accept the aftermarket intake? What else would be involved in this changeover?
The stock heads will work with a carb. If you gut the smog stuff off the only thing that you will have to do is weld the cross over tube that connects the two exhaust ports together in the back. Just weld it shut and your good to go!
I assume that he already knows that the distributor will need to be changed and some type of aftermarket ignition will need to be installed. The computer controls the stock setup and if you get rid of the fuel injection the computer will not know what to do with the ignition. It will also be necessary to convert from the high pressure fuel system used on the fuel injection to a low pressure one designed for use with a carb.

You can also block the air pipe tube that goes to the back of your heads by removing the valve at the junction (behind the carb) and replacing the valve with a pipe cap (from a local plumbing/hardware store). Or...Ford sells the threaded plugs for the heads. The threads are somewhat unique and are different than the standard plugs you can get from the auto stores.
