I have a 72 F250 2wd, 360, 4BBL, T18 4speed hauling rig. I pull a 20' flat bed with it, with varied loads- one day it might be my Courier, or my wife's Wagoneer, or an 8,000lb Bobcat, or even 10-11,000lbs of dirt. It'll need a clutch before too long, and I'd like to put in a good one. I usually use whatever the $120 clutch kit is at Schuck's, but I don't want to do this one again in a year. I'm also not too worried about having to stand on the clutch pedal to disengage.
What is the best bang for the buck in clutches for towing and hauling?
Well, Carolina Clutch and Performance sponsors this forum. I have no knowledge of their products but I would at least check them out.
When I had my shop we used LuK clutches almost exclusively. They are very high quality units. We installed hundreds of them and never had a warranty failure. Sachs is also a quality unit. When we couldn't get LuK, we used Sachs.
The $125 specials at the chain stores (Autozone, Advance, Pep B's, Kragen, ORielly, etc...) are all remanufactured units instead of new. I would NEVER use one. Again, when I had my shop, we got these units in regularly (installed at other shops or by the owner) with problems like broken disk hubs, broken pressure plate springs, warped pressure plates or disks and linings that came off.
Be sure you have the flywheel resurfaced when you install the new clutch. It will be money well spent.
All they have is a stock replacement. I would love to stay with a sponsor, but I want something that will work and work for years.
I'll probably wind up buying two of whatever I wind up getting, since my 72 4x4 will have an FE also, and at 8000lbs it will need a good clutch to work off-road.
I put a LuK clutch and a Vallejo brand pressure plate in my 86 F-250 a few years ago and it works just fine. I towed a 72 Ventura II 1000 miles up through the Rockies and the truck never slipped or bucked or whined. I also pulled a 30' motorhome 100 yards through the mud just after I got it in there and it never slipped a bit.
I got them both from Clutch Masters here in Billings but I would assume that any clutch shop would have the same components.
I have a southbend in my sig truck. I am also a mason and carry 3 ton in the box more than I should.I haven't felt the clutch slip once even with the abuse it gets some days. I should add that I live in the rockies.
