Chokes

Can anyone help me out on the proper way to hook up a bi-metal type choke? This is a coil type choke but it's heated by exhaust thru a 5/16th's tube. Not electric. It's a 2bbl Holley, except for the choke part I know them well, and I'm wantin' to put it on my 302.

So do I just use the exhaust manifold for a heat source, or should I figger some way to directly route the fire up there?

I don't believe you would route the actual exhaust up to the choke, but fresh air that is warmed by the exhaust. Most 302's had a fitting on the pass side exhaust manifold. I don't know though if this would be enough to make it work, since ford used this AND electric assist too. I hate working on chokes. They are very hard to get right when they don't work.

You can build a chimney from the exhaust manifold up to the choke to warm the choke up. On my headers they sent a 1" pipe with a slot on the bottom that allowed the pipe to be clamped to the header with hose clamps....however, most of the intakes have a choke plate directly under the choke that you can open up and put a chimney from the plate to the choke.

I found a passenger exhaust manifold with a boss on it for heating the choke. The tube's broke but I think some drilling and tapping for a new line will make it as good as new.

Thanks for the responses.

J.C. Whitney sells an electric converstion cap for this and they work pretty well. have used them on both Ford and Holley carbs. It is by far the simpliest way to go.
