I always heard that to properly run on propane fuel & without lossing power or mileage it takes a much higher compression ratio something like 11 or 12 to 1 instead of 8 or 9 to 1.
A friend of mine had a high compression 429 and the only way to run it once the old (real) premium type fuel became obsolete was only on propane, there was no other way of stopping the excessive pinging.

Morris you could be right. I personally dont really know much about them except what I have heard from a few people.

Propane systems arent my cup of tea on a gasser.

If you want to run propane properly, you build the engine to use it. Morris is correct you want to run higher compression to utilize the full potential of propane. Putting it on an engine that has less than 9.5:1 compression is going to result in less than adequate performance unless you get one of those expensive propane setups that the offroad guys use but then pretty much the whole gasoline setup is gone from the engine.
