ulsd low ash oil

in the 07 and newer diesel because of the particulate filter they need to run low ash oil. they say that the oil is reverse compatible and can be use in the older trucks they said it is not suppost to turn black as soon and keep internals cleaner.
just wondering if anyone tried it and if it has a differents before i spend the extra money for the oil .

It is not that big of a deal. If you have bought diesel oil in the last yr. You have bought the oil that is designed for the ULSD trucks. All the diesel oil that is sold in this country has to meet that spec. The new spec is CJ-4 the old spec is CI-4. Hope this helps. As far as it not turning black, is simply not true. It all depends upon the brand. I run Schaeffers and it does not turn black until about 8,000 miles. Rotella and some of the others will turn black within 5mins. I am not saying Rotella is a bad oil. I would hate for anybody to get the wrong idea.

The new CJ-4 spec oil will work fine for you. I have not seen a difference on a used oil analysis report when comparing the Schaeffer's CI-4 oil to Schaeffer's CJ-4 oil on the the same PSD that ran both. Now having said that, I takled with two 7.3L PSD owners that have noticed that the Ford Motorcraft CJ-4 version has shown some foaming on the dipstic and a very slight difference in idle. After switching to Schaeffer's or Delo 400 the issue was no longer present. I can not find any technical data on the Ford Motorcraft CJ-4 oil that shows the ASTM sequence I,II,III test results to prove that the oils foaming characteristics are different from Schaeffers or Delo. Currently the CJ-4 standard alows up to 10% on the Foam sequence test I, 20% seq II, and 10% seq III. Just to make sure I would choose a CJ-4 oil that has all zeros on the foam sequence test results since the HEUI inj system on the 7.3L does not do well with foam.

I know at the cat dealer that i work for still has regular diesel oil and ulsd oil we have both in stock also went to a class about two monthes ago and asked the instructor he called the cat engineer and they said that it is reverse compatible. i asked because the new cat engines are mono rail fuel and the old are huei and was concern about foaming if i put it in the huei engines. they said no problem.

Amsoil makes both CI-4 and CJ-4, the series 3000 has anti foaming agent, it is CI-4

Most decent diesel oils have a anti-foaming agent in them, the foam sequence test will show how well the oil performs.

Do you know what the ASTM D-892 foam sequence test results are for the series 3000?

My only problem (besides the high cost) is that the seiries 3000 is 5W-30 diesel oil not a 40 weight and the application recommends a 15W-40 (or a 5W-40), a 30 weight is only recommended for temps below 30 degrees. Since the OP lives in Hawaii he really shouldn't see temps below 30 degrees. Engineers generally agree the thicker 15W-40 (AME) will provide slightly more wear protection than 5W-30 (HDD).
