i have a buddy looking for an aftermarket camshaft for our trucks.. does anyone make a cam for the powerstroke?!?! i can't find one anywhere yet. i though crane made a cam for these things? anyone know where to find an aftermarket cam? we have been thinkin' of what these trucks could do with a good camshaft and so he wants to try it out. its gonna be a long night once we do find one and install it....
Not much to be gained from a cam on diesels. there are a few custom grind cams out there but they are big money from what I understand. Mostly guys that are sled pulling and dragging their truck only. I don't think there are many daily drivers out there with different cams.
so where can we get a cam for it? he wants this truck to haul major a$$... he is on the whole mix the air and fuel perfect and we are thinking a cam will help with that a little more also. i prefer adding a ton of fuel and saying hold on, but he wants to try out a cam for his... so i'm just trying to help him find a place to get one.
I have no idea. Check with Blackwidow diesel performance or Diesel innovations. Probably would have to call them. What mods does your friend already have? BTW if he want the fuel and air mixed perfect you should remind him that the PSD is a direct injection engine. Mixture has more to do with fuel injectors, turbo and piston design than cam shafts. He is thinking about gas engines. Diesels are totally different.
X2 on that last part by TJ.
The only real benefit of a cam is a small reduction in EGT's, and maybe a few horses...
Not worth it for the money, unless you're talking about going past the 500 or 600 hp mark, IMHO.
If you want to tweak fuel to air ratios in these trucks, do injectors and a chip, and let your engine breath.
yeah, i agree with all that tim. he has a big chip in it right now, diy intake that i put on it, and exhaust. that's it. i told him that if he wanted more power then go with diy injectors and some different tunes, but he doesn't listen to anything i try to tell him. this is his first diesel so he is slowly learning like i have. i told him to do all he wanted with the cam and everything and i will just do fueling enhancements with injectors and a dp-tuner and we will race and see which one truly has more after it's said and done... he was all for it, but i will keep trying to get him into the fuel side of it rather than cams and stuff. thanks guys
yeah, like i said. i will keep on him about the fuel instead of the cam. i personally can't wait to put my stage 1's in here so i can show him that when you add more fuel you will also get more air as well. right now i get 20 psi of boost and after the injectors i should be around 30psi. he will believe me once he sees it...
on a more serious note, tell him to become a member here and read around for a while. he will quickly be pointed in the right direction as i have been (and still am being). im another vote for "waste of money" unless he has nothing better to do with it. i once had a $30k list made up of things for an engine built from the block up and i was quickly educated to the many many expensive flaws of the list for big horsepower. the cam was one of them (hypermax, btw). ive pretty much got the list to under $20k now thanks to these guys. get him on the boards!
Oh BTW I have always want to make a lamp out of a Cam shaft. bore a hole in the center to runt he cord and the shaft would be the base and stem of the lamp. it would look great in my office!! I have also used 4 350 pistons and rods to make an end table. Two tiered and the pistons and rods where the supports for the second tier. looked great but was it heavy!
