289 or 302?

What is a easy/quick way to find out wether an engine is a 302 or a 289ci? it isnot in the origional carso i cannot just run the Vin. The Person who has it, only had it a short while and believes is a 302, but the decoded #s on the intake say it is a 1966 289 out of a falcon. but it has the Dura Spark Ingnition also, which means either the intake has been changed or the Ingnition
Thank you

289 or 302?

on the back passanger side of the block there is a casting number. That would be your best bet. if the first character is a "c" and the next character is anything before a "9" i would guess 289 or less, except for some rare cases where late 68 block was used as a 302 because they are the same block. If the first character is a D or E you have a 302. (assuming you know its not a 351W but the manifolds would not interchange)
You can also check the numbers on the harmonic balancer. Balancers tend to stick with origional engines. look for the same casting numbers that look like "C7XE-AB" where the c7 is 1967 the e means engine division and the ab means change number. sorry i forgot what the X means

289 or 302?

What IS the difference between a 289 and a 302? The reason I ask is I have what supposedly is a 302. I believe it originally came out of a 64 Fairlane because that's what turned up the right water temp sensor for the C4AE intake manifold. Haven't found a head casting number but FWIW, there is a large "289" cast under the valve cover.

Can a 289 be rebuilt into a 302 with bigger pistons or possibly a 302 crank? If so, am I looking at significantly higher compression?

289 or 302?

Well the heads are definately 289 so i would assume the rest of the block is as well. The difference between a 302 and 289 is the 289 has a 4.00 x 2.87 bore and stroke while the 302 has a 4.00 x 3.00 bore and stroke. with the exception of that, MOST parts are basicaly the same. The heads can be a little different because of emmissions and i beleive the fuel pump eccentric is slightly different on the 289 than 302. at least on the ones I have built they are. Hope that this is a help
