so jarod you are calculating your mileage from a full tank of fuel to empty. you know there is a procedure to get your speedo to read correctly for your new tire size so you are getting a more accurate reading. its a nice feature of having an e4od. do a search in the bronco forum for PSOM tire size change. the steps are pretty simple.
My truck usually averages 4-6mpg around town. (which is why I don't drive it)
Best I have ever gotten was with a light load making a 400 mile trip with one stop.
I got 13 mpg.
If your working under the assumption of rpm's correlate to mpg, it seems to me like having bigger tires would increase mpg if your driving consistent longer distances.
I want to get 33's for my truck because from the calculations I have done it will drop my engine 500 rpms at 65 mph. Driving for any reasonable distance would cancel out the extra work that the engine would have to do to get the tires turning.
I have had to put bigger tires on my truck one time out of necessity due to the fact that I needed tires until they I could get a new set. They were 315/75/16 which are about 3 inches taller than the stock size of 235/85/16. on the 430 mile round trip run to go get the tires with only 10 miles city driving my mileage went from 14 MPG down to 12 MPG. That experience was what gave me the idea to run smaller tires.
I know that lowering my truck should also boost my mileage but that is not going to happen. I still have to work my truck from time to time in which case the new stock size I have will go back on the truck so that I can haul or pull something.
As far as the tire size affecting gas mileage here is my experience. 20 years of putting bigger tires on mine and customers trucks killing gas mileage. One moment a few months ago with the the trip mentioned earlier gave me the "aha" factor and the idea to run smaller tires to improve mileage. So far it is working. I have another 400+ mile trip to make in a week or so and then I will give my results including miles, fuel used, and MPG.
i have a 93 f-150 extened cab 4x2 with a 302 an e4od tranny it just passed 180,000 i'm not sure on my gas milage but i know its not good i want to tune it and make it get better gas milage as cheap as possible some body please help me i'm open to suggestions
i would like to tune up my 93 f-150 extended cab 4x2 i dont have good gas milage i want to get better milage and make it run better but i'm not the smartest on this truck but i'm learning i would like to do all this as cheap as possible the truck set for 5 yrs. i just bought it 3 weeks ago and i want to work on it but i dont know where to start somebody please help me
Out of 5 460 any combo 4x4 auto manual 2x4 reg well you get Idea . I have owned plus all trucks at work None get above 12MPG . And that was a 2x4 F250 reg cab . You r doing good .
If you r not Reseting Posom match tires and see what get .Your getting wrong reading now .
At 3" smaller you get more miles But not really more MPG . THe rpm will be high = more gas. On some truck a smaller will help because of gears . Others a larger tire (within bounds) will drop RPMS
As stated before. I am calculating miles by routes I clocked before I put the smaller tires on the truck so I know how many miles I am going. On the few routes that I did not clock ahead of time I am confirming my miles with a GPS. And yes as soon as I buy a new set of tires I will be resetting the calibration on my speedo/odo
OK I just got back from my trip to American Fork, UT. and here are my figures. Approx. 291 mile (proven by GPS, google maps, and by calculating the odometer variation percentage) using 18.1 gallons of gas = 16.077 MPG with my 460 running smaller tires.
I can not as yet find a good set of tires that can withstand the county road I drive to work and back so I will have to settle for a size that comes in a ten ply ratting. I know that this will affect my MPG but good tires trumps MPG as I would not be saving anything having to replace my tires every week.
Next step, tonneu cover. Can't wait to see how much that will help. If anyone has any other ideas please share them. I am allways looking for something new to think about.
Oh, I forgot to mention. Yes almost all the miles were highway miles. The gas stations I use are located right by the on/off ramp so of the 291 miles driven about half a mile was city miles. All the rest were highway miles. And just in case I did not mention earlier, I do drive conservitavely. Unless I am in a big hurry I do not get my truck over 60 MPH. As soon as I am done with my experiment I will be doing a 75 MPH test to compare the results.
Another trick you can try which should help is install a timing chain and gear from a 69 429.The 460 gears are I think 8 degrees retarded (done for emmisions ) this will boost low end tourque and use less throttle opening to accelerate.
I have heard of the TB spacers improving performance and MPG's. I will have to put one on my truck for the experiment factor if nothing else.
I have been thinking about a performance TB but so far have only found one. It is a BBK TB I found in a 6 year old PAW catalog. Has anybody had any experience with BBK products or know of any other throttle bodies for an EFI 460?

On a wet carburated or throttle body EFI intake the carb spacers do make a difference because they promote better fuel atomization. But on a dry tuned runner EFI intake where the high pressure injectors squirt at the back of intake valves in the head, the chunk of aluminum 16" upstream of the injectors behind the butterflies will have ZERO effect on anything related to airflow or fuel atomization.

There is another guy here that has one for sale I believe, he tried it on his 460 and all he got was worse milage.
I have a '87 460 w/fi and a c6 tran. My research indicates that the easiest route would seem to be freeing the exhaust restrictions and manipulating the computer chip.
In addition, installing a sophisticated distributor system and hi-performance plugs and wires seems to help.
