My relatively new 302 remanufactured engine has a quiet rattle/knock when its under a load. It dont shake any, just makes the sound. I'll retard the timing a little and see how that helps. The oil pressure hasnt really gone down much. Seems that it does it more when its hot. Almost like it takes a little time, a few seconds, to make the sound after i hit the gas and the truck's accelerating. Like it takes a little while for the oil film to be wiped from a bearing. Someone told me that the distributor might be goin bad and the magnetic pickup might be bad or sumthin on my duraspark 2 distributor.
What intake system are you running? If it's factory, make sure the egr valve is hooked up. If you have an aftermarket 4bbl, retarding the timing a little may help.
Let us know what your timing is set at and how much you have to retard it to quit pinging. I was down to 6 degrees BTDC and was still experiencing the ping when the engine was hot and I was pulling a hill or under heavy acceleration. I fought this for almost a year before the distributor finally would quit (usually in the middle of the street someplace)...it was just like someone turned the key off. I stumped my local mechanic and he said it was my aftermarket MSD ignition...but I finally traced it to a bad magnetic pickup in the distributor. I replaced the distributor, reset my timing to 14 BTDC and haven't had a problem...plus the truck runs cooler to boot!!!
