Suburb Departments usually don't put you through academy and require you to have experience as some will not put you through school. Also it is rare to become a full time firefighter at one department if you work in the suburbs, because I know here most of them are part timers, and most work at 2 different houses to make up for the part time. As for inner city you got Full time mostly.

Work wise do you mean type of calls? Id have to say it all varies on what Department it is and your location. The calls range from town to town, you could go days without making any calls then theres days your going from one call to another.

Im not doin it to get rich lol. As long as i can have a decent truck ( like RDJ ill be a verrry happy camper lol ) Do full time firefighters work one day and get 48 hours off? Thats what i have heard from several people. Is that true? I also plan to start a landscapin business ( i have started already) or get into real estate by my self or with my pops.

Some work 24 on 48 off. a Department around here works 48 on 72 off. But most Departments you work a 3 day rotation, IE Work 12 hours every day, thats why most work a second department.

Anymore questions shoot em our way.

Typically you would be on one of three units, 1,2,3.

you work 12 hours straight then are off for 24 hours then repeat.

Here is a link of a local Department that uses unit days. Pretty much you work a 12 hour shift every 3rd day.

let's say its January 2008 and your on unit 2

You will work Wednesday, Saturday, Tuesday, Friday and so on every 3rd day.

Cleveland Ohio?

Here is there Union site
Cleveland Fire Department: Local 93

Here is the City Ran Website
Division of Fire - City of Cleveland

Not much information but has phone numbers that may get you started.

If they are not hiring Id suggest getting a hold of your local volunteer Department so you can get a feel for things and get your feet wet.

My son-in-law is going thru the process for City of Dallas as we speak. Long process. Has more than enough college credits. Scored high on the written test and is now entering the physical stage. He is in pretty good shape, had been running even prior to deciding to chase after this opportunity and hauled fire wood all winter for extra $$$$....But, I don't think he REALLY knows what's comin'....If you know what I mean.

Both he and my daughter are excited about his chances.

I'm a career Fire/Medic. I started volunteering and got my KY FF1 and National Registry EMT-B. The volly dept paid for all of that. That's all I needed to get hired at my full time job. But I had to get KY FF2 in a year, which was no problem. I was close, but never had the motivation until $$$$ were involved.

I decided to be a medic about 6 months before I got hired. This is not needed depending on where you live. In KY, it's still mostly or at least 50/50 FF/EMT-Bs. Ohio is more into all medics. I'd suggest only being a medic if you want to be one. It's a long road and you can actually kill people if you screw up.

Most FFs work 24 hours on and 48 off. That's what I do. There are some other gravy schedules like 24 on and 72 off, but that's not as popular. There are also other wierd schedules but I'd say that most FFs do 24 on 48 off.

While you won't get filthy rich, you can make good money and have a lot of time off and a lot of benefits. Some places are better than others. Where do you live.

The big thing is that jobs are extremely competitive in the fire service. I was #3 out of about 150-200 people that tested with me. It took me 5 years and several tests at several departments to get the job, so you can't give up easily.

As far as strength is concern, work on lungs and legs and general conditioning. You don't have to be huge to do the job. I'm only 175, but fairly fit. The CPAT is a total joke. If you have to take that test, don't sweat it as it's simple for anyone that doesn't down 5 big macs a day.

If you have any direct questions, feel free to PM me.

Mike
