If your oil temp is up to operating range (180*) then its O.K. to start with a tune. If its a cold start , let the temps come up before switching from stock.
PS. Your little water temp guage in the dash does not mean your up to 180* oil temp. It can take another 10 miles or so for the oil to come to temp after the water does.

Brandon is right on. I like to start mine in stock then switch to a tune after the temps get up. I will have to admit that I have not always done this, but after talking with the guys at smoking they have changed my ways. Also, Jeremy(JTHarvery) reminded me not to switch the tunes under a load. Let off the pedal and then switch, give it a second or two to adjust then hammer down.

I have heard the same on a really cold start.
.
For the most part I don't give it much thought, just crank her over. What do you guys think the pitfalls are when starting the truck with a tune.

According to what we learned from Jody during mine and Mikes Live tuning, starting a cold truck in a performance tune can raise the pressures in the heads (not combustion, but ICP) to dangerous levels. Why? Because the PCM will retard the timing(up to 27*) due to cold oil. Jody told us the absolute WORST thing you can do to a PSD is start it in a tune cold, and then go romp on it before the oil is up to temp. IOW dont race your neighbor out of the subdivision unless you have let your truck warm up first.

So starting in a tune is ok, because there is no load, as long as you don't drive untill it's up to temp.

That's what I have been doing. I live in Minnesota, so six months of the year I **** away fuel warming up my truck.

Its up to you, but I will be starting my truck (when cold) in the stock tune from now on.
