Is it IDI or Powerstroke?

Hi guys, i am new here and i just bought a '94 Ford F250 with a 7.3L Diesel non-turbo. I am not too familiar with diesel engines so i was just wondering if this was and IDI or powerstroke. I know in '94 they had the IDI, the IDI w/turbo, and Powerstroke. I was told by a friend that not all powerstrokes have a turbo in '94. Here are a few pics of the engine if it helps.

IT IS DEFINATLY AN IDI. No turbo, older style air cleaner, mechanical injection pump behind oil fill tube and metal injection lines going to each cylinder. Looks very clean and taken care of. No rust all over the place and battery cables look great. I belive all powerstrokes had turbos. In mid 94 they switched from IDI to powerstroke. Some IDIs from 93 to 94 1/2 had a turbo option from the factory but they were not POWERSTROKES either until 94 1/2ish. Its a great motor but just keep up the glowplug system and the coolant sca level to prevent cavitation to the cylinder walls. You can buy the sca coolant test strips at a parts store and the ones I have are made by fram but I can't remember the part number. Have a great day

Thank you for the info. I really appreciate it. Now I know where to begin looking for mods for it. I would like to turbo it. Is it possible to do that fairly easily?

Man that is a nice looking truck and I wish I had those rims, I Think they are the best looking ones on this style truck. As for mods, the only mod that I have done so far is the banks sidewinder but I just put it on last night so i REALLY don't know how well it will work. it was somewhat difficalt to install with the close cab to engine clearence but it may be easier on yours if you have a body lift on it. I did notice that after the turbo was installed I could pull the hills against the wind with very little trouble where before it would almost have to be floored and poured out the black smoke. Now its like 1/4 throttle or less with no black smoke. I didn't turn up the fuel yet just to see how well it would run on its current setting but I think I can get more out of it. I just hope it helps my fuel from 16mpg to a little more with $4 a gal. Well good luck and have a great day.

All stock no lift as of yet. Would like to crank a little more power out of it because I plan on turning it in to a mud racing truck. I am hoping that the diesel engine will solve the problems i had with a gas engine ('79 7.5L 460) drowning out all the time. Will snorkel it and put a stack on it.

Turbos are available from ATS, Hypermax, and Banks... IIRC the hypermax was the best priced option.... They make the IDI a totally different animal... atleast the IDI turbos I have been in were...

1984 through 1994 were IDI,s only 1994 had the IDI TURBO option,1995 was the change to the 7.3 DI powerstroke, 2003 changed to the 6.0 powerstroke and 2008 changed to the 6.4 powerstroke

93 and 94 had optional turbo available.
94 1/2 had the IDI non turbo, the IDI turbo and the PSD was available with a 5 speed only.

An old beater would require much more work to maintain and get ready for mud racing. But it won't become a mud truck for another couple of years anyway till after I get out of the military. On that note it may be another 14 years before i get out of the military.

If your planning on competition racing, the diesel isn't going to be your best choice IMO.
First of all, the weight is going to nosedive the front end and you will not get any traction on the rear
Second. You are not going to be able to get much wheel speed from the low revving engine. They are built to make torque down low, not rev at 6K rpm's.

The only thing you will be gaining is not having an ignition system to keep dry. Pick a gasser. There are a lot of tricks you can do to keep the engine dry and running. Keep that one as a driver to pull your mud truck around. It is too nice to destroy in a mud pit.

Just to set the record straight (because I'm tired of people asking if my '91.5 Cummins is a turbo) ALL Powerstrokes AND ALL Cummins equiped Dodges ARE TURBOS!
Sorry, just had to get that off of my chest.

I have to agree with everyone else, diesels make terrible mud-boggers. We have a lot of mud around here so basiscally every off-road truck around here is a mud-bogger by default. They're too heavy and too little RPM.

I understand the desire to use one, especially the mechanical ones, as there is so little that MUST be waterproofed but it doesn't work, I've tried it, half-heartedly, and seen many others also without much luck.

Keep it nice and use it to tow a bogger to the pit.

By the way, THANKS FOR YOUR SERVICE!
