351w Questions
How can I tell what year my engine is. I just bought the truck its a 51 ford f1 with a 351w owner did not know. they installed a remote oil filter due to clearance proublems, is there a short filter that will work with this engine. Also they mounted the oil filter upsidedown bottom of filter is up is this allright or should I remount. Thanks.

Your filter should be just fine. The best way to find out what year motor you have is to find a casting number. For the block, it is on the passenger's side beside the starter. should be a long number beginning with C9__ or something like that usually four letters/numbers. There is also a casting on the bottom of the heads where they would meet the oil valley. You would hvae to have them off to see it, but it is also a four digit combo like: C9OE or D0OE if it was built before 1974. The codes are fairly simple to break down:
C9OE ~ C means 1960s and the 9 means the year (1969).
Decoding the casting number will give you an estimate of what year they were made, but it is not exact.
As for that oil filter, it should be fine upside down.

TRY USING A FRAM PH43. ORGINALLY USED ON DODGE 318'S, BUT IT IS HALF THE HEIGHT OF A PH-8 USED ON FORDS. ALSO, CONVERT THE FRAM NUMBER OVER TO A WICKS NUMBER. THE FILTER ELEMENT IS TWICE AS MUCH AS FOUND IN A FRAM FILTER.
