I was hoping for that cool turbo sound through the exhaust when I installed a 4" turbo back system on my '04. Didn't happen. The exhaust sounds good, but I really don't hear that much more whine than before. Are guys running without a muffler, or using an aftermarket turbo to hear that?
I have a 04 F250 6.0L and but a MBRP 4" turbo back exhaust, and I have an extreme turbo whistle from idle to about 2500 rpm's, anything above 2500-3000 rpm's it rumbles like a big block. I also installed the same system on my neighbors 04' F350 6.0L and he has no more whistle than the stock system, his is all rumble. The only difference I seen on the two trucks was that mine had a resonator on the down pipe leaving the turbo and his did not. I was told that some turbo's have a silencing ring, not sure if that is right or not but two identical trucks sound so different. I sure someone will chime in with more info.
I pulled the exhaust of my '04 F250 from the cat back. It rumbles when you're on it, but hardly noticeable at start, idle, or conservativley driving. Turbo whistle isn't much louder either. I was told to take the converter off too. I'm still wondering if I should pipe it to the back of the truck or leave it cut off.
I've got an 04 with stock downpipe still into a 4" straight pipe back to the stock pipe at the rear axle i'm in the process of lookin for a 4" rear section and 3.5 downpipe but the downpipe can wait more worried bout the rear.. mine sounds great like a jet at idle and low rpms with rumble at higher its not too noticeable in the cab but i let a buddy drive it and dang that thing sounds like its gonna take off a runway lol
I also forgot to mention mine is a 4" turbo back with the cat-delete pipe and the MBRP muffler. As stated above it sounds like a Jet on the tarmac taking off. Then when there is a load or on it hard it rumbles like big rig.

Was your truck actually built before 9/23/03 and just called an 04? You said your downpipe had a resonator. That more than likely means you have an 03 turbo on your truck. It has fewer vanes one the exhaust side of the turbo than the 9/24/03 and later trucks do.
I have an 04 with the dual mbrp exhaust from turbo back with cat and also put on a k&n filter system.Mine has had a new turbo put on and sounds good. But mine sounds differant then other fords. It is wierd how one ford sounds to others but when I stomp pedal I like the sound.
If you still have the stock intake you would be smart to put it back on and ditch the K&N. Most on here will tell you this as the K&N will let more fine particulates into your new turbo, and that my friend is no good. I had a K&N and bought a stocker from Ebay and run that now, its good up to @500 HP. And don't worry you won't lose the whistle, but if you want more whistle may I suggest Grand Rock " high water exhaust" w/no kitty or muffler Just my .02

If you go aftermarket it's going to be the reverse and it actually sounds better at higher rpms and sounds like a screaming jet zipping bye. I always get people looking at me when I go bye with a strange look on their face as if they are expecting to see something go flying off my truck.
The early 03 turbos are the ones that have the best whistle at low rpms, it doesn't matter if the resonater is/was on there as it mainly depends on the amount of vanes on the turbo and pulling the silencer ring out. I say this because I had Matt's old 03 turbo on my 06 and I had the same whistle at low rpms that everyone loves, but no resonater(unless your using the resonater as a means of identifying if it's the correct turbo or not). My suggestion would be to get a rebuilt 03 turbo and the corresponding pedestal for that turbo or just get an aftermarket one and have the cool screaming whistle at higher rpms(I like that better then the 03 turbo and that says a lot I think, not to mention the benefit of better performance).

I still have all the stock set up I took off truck! I always keep it for if I need to put back on.The problem I had with the stock one is it always starved for air and would have a bad hesitation when taking off.Now that I changed system that went away. Now I live at 4500 feet above sea level and that might be part of it.So as to the fine particles not sure but the guy from k&n said that it would filter better and the guy from ford said it should be allright but I never take anyones word for it,so I always keep parts.I will look into it some more thanks.
yea i have the same results its jus that at idle it sounds like a turbine engine and at high rpms flying by its the same loud jet like whistle but with a rumble to it i LOVE it
I have the MRBP 4" system, cat delete, Predator tuned (100HP setting) and a K&N "cold air". Not sure where they get that name from, but the truck also sounds like a jet when its idling, then goes away like stock. You can still hear the whine, just like total stock, but I expected way more whine when I opened up the exhaust. I drive an 04. Is there a silencer ring on the turbo inlet that can be removed? I thought only Dodge trucks had those.
I mainly performed the upgrades to increase the mileage and that had only a marginal effect. Prior to these upgrades, my truck got horrrrible mileage ever since the last visit to the dealer. The EGR valve blew out and water got into the motor. Blew white smoke out of the pipe for three days before I brought it in for service. I did not receive a new turbo, but did get a new EGR valve. They also flashed the PCM with a ridiculous low-output tune. They probably tried to idiot-proof the motor so they wouldn't have to fix it again. I used to get up to 19 MPG, and after the EGR thing, max was like 13 on a good day. I can get up to 17 now, even with a taller tire.
Anyone else have these problems? I wonder if the turbo is bad @ 86k miles.
I'm running a Magnaflow 4" turbo back with no cat/muffler. My truck is an '06 and has the crazy whistle at idle/low rpm's. I honestly thought something was seriously wrong when I fired the truck up for the first time once we were done with the exhaust install. Then I remembered that it's SUPPOSED to do that hahahah. It deff pisses ppl off.....esp at traffic lights when they pull up next to you and they put their windows up. I always get comments from ppl such as "does that have a jet engine?" or "can you turn your truck off while you're filling up?" I always say no, b/c I'm letting my EGT's cool off..... which you just get a dumb blank stare in return. The only complaint I have is that you are getting the turbo whistle from the exhaust only, so you can really only hear it on the exhaust side. I purposely drive with my passenger side window down so I can hear it hahaha
