I've recently begun experiencing a problem with my truck dieing immediately upon start up. It's a 99 5.4 and it will act like it's starting normally but then will idle down and die. If I gas it to 4000-5000 rpm it will eventually return to normal idle and run fine. At first it was once a week and then every day, usually upon the second start of the day but today it happened twice and I suspect it will become more frequent. Any suggestions as to what to check that doesn't involve a Ford Dealer?
Hi Mustang88,
Sounds like your Idle Air Controller (IAC) is fouled. When they get dirty, they stick and the truck won't idle. Dealer will replace for about $60. or you can clean it yourself.
Or the ultra cheapskate way = Use your jack handle to tap the IAC
whenever it sticks. On the 5.4L it is on top of the motor, look directly under the passenger windshield wiper post. It has a rubber half inch hose feeding out of it to the left.
To be sure this is your problem, next time it won't idle give the IAC a few sharp taps with the end of the jack handle(or other long heavy object like a screwdriver) this will unstick it and she'll fire right up.
Good luck and God Bless America,
