I posted this on the T-case forum with limited response.
I bought a 77 hiboy 4x4 and am trying to identify the T-case. The shift **** would lead me to a Np 203 but a FORD "EXPERT" said it was a 205. I am only able to shift it into 2 positions 2wd and 4wd. The **** is as follows--
lock
low
N
High
Lock
I can shift from what apears to be the low up to the lock position. In low it is 2wd with hubs locked in lock it is 4wd with hubs locked. I push ,pull, go side to side with no other movement. All advice will be appreciated. Oh It is a 351m auto.
That is an NP203. I have one in my 75. It is a full time 4x, unless someone prior put in a kit with the unlocking hubs. There are certain speeds involved for shifting it in and out of the different positions. I don't have the book on me, but if you're interested in knowing, I'll go get it and share the knowledge.
A 205 will have 4L N 2H 4H on the shifter. Hope that helps clear it up a bit. If you need the info, just holler.
BTW.. UTFball, that is a saweeet lookin 77!
It does have manual Lock/unlock hubs. Unsure if orig. equip. The truck is fairly straight and apears to be not F*%$ed with however who knows. I have had one other hiboy 4x4 and Im sure it was a 205. this 203 seems unusual to me. I can only shift in 2 positions. 2wd up to 4wd however the **** shows other positions. So, am I not shifting correctly or is it broke?
From what I've learned so far, these do have some adjustments that can be made. Also, just because of it's age, I'm sure there is some slop in the controls which don't help matters any. The Autozone repair guides is where I saw a diagram of how to adjust these things. Also, there is is a smart guy on here who goes by Mil1ion, who has tons of info and diagrams.
Your problem is most likely an out of adjustment problem.
Here is what the 1975 owners manual says in a nutshell:
HI to HI LOCK- Shift from HI to HI LOCK can be made while truck is in motion.
HI LOCK to HI- Shift from HI LOCK to HI can be made while truck is in motion.
HI to LO- Truck must be stopped or moving less than 3 MPH. Shift automatic tranny to N, shift from HI to LO. If resistance or blockage is noticed, return to HI, place auto tranny in D and move truck forward. Then shift auto tranny back to N and repeat above process.
LO to LO LOCK- Shift from LO to LO LOCK can be made while truck is in motion.
LO LOCK to LO- Shift can be made while truck is in motion.
LO to HI- Stop vehicle, place auto tranny in N. Shift from LO to HI. When the HI position is reached and before the shift is completed, a slight resistance will be noticed. The shift lever should be moved through this resistance to complete the shift.
If during the shift, resistance or blockage is noticed other than the slight resistance before completing the HI shift, return the transfer case shift lever to the LO position. Put the auto tranny in D and move truck forward. Then shift the auto tranny back to N and repeat above process.
I found the owners manual last night and so I thought that this might help ya out a little?
