i am having trouble with pulling my trailer a gooseneck, or should I say thats when you can tell I have power problems, heres my symptoms pulling.
Takes off fine or seems but get to around 40mph and gets alot slower in pick up unless punched and EGTs are to high able to maintain only about 55 and running about 1000 EGT in OD trans is not shifting up and down trans temp is only 150 to 160 never higher try to accerlate any higher and EGTs can go to 1400. I never have any black smoke have unhooked Map and no change, fuel pressure with it bouncing like crazy looks like 55psi, i ahve just got it out of shop where one of my cleints has the biggest and most up to date equipment in town and has gone to alot of schools for Fords and can't find any computer issues with no codes no bad injectors miss firing. Just no real power my GCW is about 20000lbs with trailer should pull it fine without any chips and stuff. And also I live in Fla. so pulling is flat but don't go ove a bridge it falls badly. I have had CPC changed, oil temp changed, speed sensor changed, this truck is also hard to start cold always have to heat it on first start even here, after truck is warm cranks fine. Got to figure something out.
Not consuming oil and after gear change I got better milage was getting about 10 to 11 HWY or town now on HWY I get about 14 almost 15 I change gears from 3.55 to 4.30 ( i have 35" tires) to help pulling I was never getting into OD and if I did would kick in and out and kill power. So if someone could give some insight would be great,,don't know if I need to check compression or how thru glow plugs? or what. Thanks.
I would check map sensor and map sensor air lines. Sounds like you might have a plugged line or fitting. They do get little clumps of oily, carbony goo in different places that restrict the flow of boosted air to the sensor so it doesn't really know what the engine needs to run its best(as in more or less fuel to go with the amount of air getting pushed into the cylinders).
First I replaced the EBPV when I first got the truck, second power normal driving seems fine a little sluggish but unless you punch it, it won't spin tires maybe in sand or something you can't power brake and spin them, third boost is only about 10 maybe 15 and when I had the chip in it that we found boost would hit almost 30 but the chip made shift really hard neck breaking sometimes. what tells the engine it needs boost or controls it. And boost lines is there only one going to Map sensor. I just think this truck should pull or have more power stock without a chip.
The map sensor tells the PCM how much boost you have. If you have boost but the map sensor does not report it correctly then you will run really lean and poor power.
As mentioned above check the map sensor hose / fitting at engine for clogs. That fixed my poor power problem. Also if you have not already tried it unplug the EBPV valve .. although if it was sticking closed you would probably hear a hissing sound.
Don't have a chip so can't comment on power thing (stock vrs. chip).
for having 20k drug around on a bone stock truck you are not going to have much power at all, 30 psi boost on a chip sounds like a california emissions truck too, 10-15 psi boost is normal for a stock truck. do you have any other mods then what is listed in your signature? the cold start probs is probably a glow plug relay, easy to diag, but the power problem is the first concern.... i dont think florida will have much more frost this season....lol
I checked the hose going to map, ok and not cloged at inlet or hose, check ebpv and at Turbo valve is open (trucks warm) I unpluged map the other day no change, chip I had I have no idea what it is, and starting when temps are high glow plugs shouldn't work with oil temp should it, I replaced one side glow plugs when I replaced and injector and I have replaced the relay but before that it wouldn't start or very hard to start during winter. And towing 20000lbs is alot? i had a 99 which I know some things are differant but used to pull right at 30000 with it, the trailer and truck weighed 20600 empty so this one to pull 20000 seems it should be fine. And no chip in the 99. I don't know got me really puzzled.
P.S I have had 6 diesel truck all ford, 99 dually,2000 excursion,02 Ex, 03 7.3 Ex. and a 05 Dually with the tow boss package, and this one wanted to rid of payments, and inlaws have a Ford dealership. In S.C.
Got a 174K on truck and yes can feel torque con. I really don't know how to check compression on this motor through glow plug and what kin of adaptor is need (thread size) and guage how big a guage will a standard engine guage work, not enough PSI,and what should it read 450??
I checked the hose going to map, ok and not clogged at inlet or hose. I unplugged map the other day no change.
With map sensor plugged in, get on it and floor it and see how it feels. Then stop and unplug it and do the same. There should be a difference. The map sensor is part of the air/fuel management system. If your turbo is packing a ton of air into the engine then you can use more fuel because the mix will be right and the fuel will burn sufficiently and give you more power. If your computer does not know that you are packing a ton of air into the cylinders then it will not add more fuel, which means good boost, low power.
Catalytic converters can restrict the flow of air which would limit your power, too.
If the hose to the map sensor has a leak that will throw things off, too.
I doubt that it is a compression issue.
Check fuel pressure. Clean the screen in the fuel filter housing.
Do the FPR BB shim.
Make sure you have a good, clean fuel filter and air filter although, low air flow=black smoke.
Ok I have done all of the above, no change, today I installed the chip agian, shifts hard and winds out gears but thats ok,first time with chip since gear change and speedo recalabration for tires, shifts better still stiff , but my boost comes in quicker and I have some black smoke now, and feels like more power, I am going to hook trailer up in a couple of days and get out on the interstate and see what happens, not going to load it, but comming hole last week and the other guy pullng my trailer i was pulling a tandem axle 16Ft with a Jeep on it and I couldn't get over 65 with it either so mine empty is more than that so I will see what happens, the spot where this chip plugs in on PCM behind E brake is there supposd to be anything there stock or is it just test port why did Ford put it there. I still feel yhis truck should pull this with out a chip,I am not a race driver and just looking for it to do what a F350 was made to do haul weight and pull at normal operating standards, But if the chip works its a cheap way to get it going.
