I have a 02 F250 with a 7.3 psd. It has a hard time to start it turns over and over and over and it will finally start and it will stay running. But it turns over way to long just wandering if anyone has an idea of what might be wrong.
Could be a few different things. First off how long (how many seconds) is too long? How old is your engine oil and is it full? How many miles are on your truck? What is the temperature outside? When did this start? How often do you drive it? Do you get any smoke out the tailpipe when trying to start, and if so what color is the smoke?
Give us some more information and we'll work through the possibilities.
It has always started up real fast but this last week it started taking a while I would say about 15 to 20 seconds. My oil has just been changed recently and it is still full. My truck has 100,000 miles on it. The weather here in Ga is about 60 to 70 degrees. I drive it everyday. And there is no smoke out the tail pipe.
With 100,000 miles and todays diesel fuel, you may be in need of new injectors. However, before spending that money, check to see that the fuel pump isnt losing its oil prime, and that the wiring thru the valve covers is not damaged/worn, and the glow plugs are all working. Tip on the glow plugs-remove the wire, connect a test light to the + Terminal on the battery, touch the glow plug connector. if the light lights, the plug is good. Also, when replacing glow plugs replace them all at the same time or they will continue to burn out one by one. One more thing to check is make sure that your cam and crank position sensors arent starting to "wick" oil. This will cause slow or faulty timing readings to the ECM and cause slow starting and poor performance.
Some one told me that my hpop reservoir could be leaking oil and making it hard to start. So I removed the alien head screw and looked at the oil level. It was about 2 inches from the top. So I got my truck running and then I cut it off and immeditaley removed the screw again the oil was all the way up to the top this time. So I kept watching and their was a air bubble that came to the top and the oil level would drop a little bit and it kept on doing this. Is this normal? Could this be my problem?

Yes. The oil level in the HPOP was the next thing I was thinking of checking. The oil should be 3/4" to 1" from the top. After letting it sit overnight check the oil level in the HPOP and top it off if needed. Then see if the truck starts quicker. I'd get out a flashlight and look at the top and front of the motor to see if the oil is leaking out or draining back into the engine.
I let my truck sit overnight and this morning I removed the alien screw and I had to put a half a quart of oil in it to fill it to the top. I got in and turned the key and it fired right up. What do I need to do to fix this?? I don't see any oil leaking on the outside so I am guessing it is leaking back into the engine somehow.
I'd say it's either a seal leak in the HPOP reservoir or possibly the check valve in the oil system. Here's a link to another thread dealing with a similar issue. There is an exploded view diagram you can look at here https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...ml#post6054762
Alright I have removed the hpop reservoir and the fuel filter reservoir. The seal on the bottom of the hpop reservoir looks to be in good shape. I was wondering if anyone has any pics or advice on how to get to the check valve??
Here's a link you can do some reading on. http://www.forddoctorsdts.com/articl...icle-06-08.php
If you scroll to the bottom of the page you will see a technicians guide to the HPOP. Hopefully Rick remembers where he saw this and returns with more advice.
Ok today I removed the whole front of the engine and I finally got to the check valve for the hpop. I removed the ball and spring and inspected it and cleaned the seat the best I could and reinstalled it. Then I began to reassemble the oil pump, water pump, ect. When I finally got it all put back together I filled the hpop reservoir full and turned the engine over it was real hard to turn at first but it fired up and died. So I done this a couple more times but my engine was not building oil pressure. So I decided to take it back apart and this time I found metal shaving in the oil pump. I found out that there is a right way and a wrong way to install the oil pump gear. It has worn a bad grove around the slots in the front cover so I am going to have to replace the front cover. Was wandering if anyone has ever done this and if so do you have any pointers?
